We’ve all heard of Disney. Weather that be Disneyland, DisneyWorld, Walt Disney, Mickey Mouse, or even Disney movies. Disney is such a household name around the world, but especially in American culture. However, there was a time when the name “Disney” meant nothing to nobody. From Walt Disney’s early life in a series of small towns, to creating the Disney brand, and finally Disney animation as we know it today, Disney became one of the largest franchises in the world. On December 5, 1901, Walter Elias Disney was born. Walt was born in the small town of Hermosa, Illinois. Along with 3 other brothers and 1 sister, Walt was one of five children. After Walt Disney died of lung cancer in 1966, the animation team struggled with their films. This period of Disney animation is known as the Dark Age. Most of the animators failed without the guidance of Walt himself. Some of the films produced in the Dark Age include: The Aristocats, Robin Hood, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, The Rescuers, The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective, and Oliver and Company.During the production of Robin Hood (1973) and The Rescuers (1977), the members of the Walt Disney studio's longtime group of animators, known as the Nine Old Men, began training replacements in preparation for retirement. This did not help the fact that Disney animation was going down hill. However, about a decade later, there came a time of Disney animation known as the Renaissance period. This was a time when most of our favorite Disney movies were created. Some of them included: The Little Mermaid, The Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, and Tarzan. All of these films take a step forward in animation, and were new, creative ideas for the time. One example of a step forward in animation is Tarzan. Disney animation has become so authentically American, that it is difficult to imagine a world without it. The Disney company has become one of the largest and most successful companies in the world.
