Wal-mart Financial Analysis By Catalina Rivera ACC205: Accounting Principles Instructor INTRODUCTION When doing a financial status report of a company you are putting together the financial condition of that particular company. The finances of the company’s future can be assumed by looking at the information provided in the financial status report. For the remainder of the paper I will take the company Wal-Mart’s earnings, liabilities and its equity structure and analyze them. This will show me all positive and/or negative items that I need to look at before giving advice to an investor. COMPANY OVERVIEW Wal-Mart was established in 1969 by a gentlemen whose name was Sam Walton. With over 11,500 stores around the globe Wal-Mart has become one of the world’s largest chain stores. Wal-Mart sells a variety of items such as: toys, sporting goods, clothing, furniture, house hold items, jewelry, and medicine just to name a few. Food items are sold in Wal-Marts that are referred to as superstores. With the variety of items being sold this makes Wal-mart a one-stop-shopping center. Wal-Mart also has its own licensed store brand that is sold within its stores. Ratio analysis can show comparisons of the past in conjunction to where it stands currently. Wainwright gives an example of a car and all its parts coming together as a whole. A car, like a company, can be complex and therefore all parts need to be looked at and maintained so it does not fall apart. Ratios can be used to isolate possible problem areas so they can deal with. Investors who are leaning to invest in multiple companies can use ratios to compare one company to another and see where the money is best invested
