One theme from Walk Two Moons is that You can’t keep the birds of sadness from flying overhead, but you can keep them from nesting in your hair. Throughout the book there is many people that go through some sort of sadness. In the book Sal says, “Gramps lay down in the bed and stared at the ceiling. “Chickabiddy,” he said, “ I miss my gooseberry.” He put one arm over his eyes. His other hand patted the empty space beside him” (259). This is one important sad thing that happened to Sal and Gramps because it was Gramps wife and Sals grandma and she was a really important to Sal cause she took her on the journey to find her mother and she had a lot of good times with her grandma. Throughout the book there is a lot of characters who always have hope. In the book the one of policemen says, “Everyone saw Mrs. Cadaver. Nine hours after the bus rolled over, as all those stretches were being carried up the hill, and everyone despairing there was her hand coming up out of the window and everyone was shouting because there it was, a moving hand.” He glanced at me. I wish it had been your mother's hand” (256). This one important part of the book was talking about there is always hope it is important because the police were telling Sal the story of how the bus crashed and he was saying that he wished the moving hand was Sal’s mothers hand. Sal says, “I kissed true willow. “Happy birthday,” I said. In the sheriff's car, I said, “She isn’t actually gone at all. She’s singing in the trees” (254). This part of the story is important because she is saying that her mother isn’t actually gone she is in the singing tree singing because she doesn’t want to believe that her mother is not going to come back because she wanted to terry and get her to come back with her on her birthday so they can move back to Bybanks and be all together as a family again.
