Wal-Mart has nearly taken over the market for discount stores in the United States. It’s efficiency is legendary and it’s philanthropic help to those in need throughout the U.S. is well noted. According to Fortune Global 500, Wal-Mart is the largest retail store in the world and after Shell Company it is the second greatest public corporation in the world, with footholds on markets worldwide, (CNN World Report, 2013). Wal-Mart boasts that in it’s 11,000 stores worldwide, that is employs 1.3 million Americans -almost 1% of the population- and another million associates in 27 countries. Through the Great Recession -also known as the collapse of the housing bubble in 2007- Wal-Mart is still expanding. For the fiscal 2013, Wal-Mart has announced that it produced over $16 billion dollars in net income, (The Motley Fool, 2013). To better understand the success of this company over it’s 51 year reign, we must first appreciate the work of it’s founder, Sam Walton.
Samuel Moore Walton was born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, on March 29, 1918. As a child he showed great ambition to be exceptional at everything he did. Throughout his childhood he worked as a paperboy, eventually paying his way through college with newspaper routes. Something that he inherited by his father, was a sense for business, although it is well known that his father had no business-sense. He graduated with a business degree at the University of Missouri at Columbia, and went straight to work at J.C. Penney. From 1942 to 1945, Walton served in the U.S. Army. He married his wife, Helen Robson, during his service on February 14,1943, (Martin, Kim). Together they had four child, named Samuel, John, James, and Alice.
