In Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot two characters, Estragon and Vladmir are waiting for ‘Godot’ in which Beckett does not explain. Along with Estragon and Vlamir comes Lucky and Pozzo another two figures who add a bit of nonsense into the play to distract the reader from the real issue, waiting for Godot. Simply who or what is ‘Godot’, is the question that Beckett’s play raises. It is easy to say that Godot is a Christ figure or God, hopefully Beckett would not make it that easy. So who/what is Godot? One may say that the characters are just waiting for someone or something to make sense of the world that they are in. The characters hopelessly wait day after day for this ‘Godot’ to come, and yet it never arrives. One must look into each character to find out who it is that Godot is searching for.

A person is created by the experiences they go through and by the things they learn throughout their life. It is the question of who each individual is and what makes up their identity. Writers, no matter the type, have been addressing the issue of identity for thousands of years. One playwright who stands out in this regard is Shakespeare and his play Hamlet. The play continually questions who the individuals are and what makes up the person they are. Yet another play can be associated with Shakespeare’s masterpiece, as Tom Stoppard takes the minor characters in Hamlet and develop them into something more in his play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. The twentieth century reinvention of the supporting characters from Hamlet, contains three major messages or themes throughout the play including identity, language, and human motivation. The play has deep meaning hidden behind the comic exterior and upsetting conclusion and each of these three themes add to the ultimate message the play invokes into its audience.
Mrs Warren's Profession and Waiting for Godot were both received with criticism when they were first introduced. Mrs Warren's Profession in particular was censored and seen as immoral for its portrayal of prostitution and incest, whereas Waiting for Godot was met with general bafflement and debate on dramatic technique. However both plays survived to enjoy notoriety. In this essay I will look at both plays and discuss if society is despaired of but hope is found in the human spirit.
Surfacely, the recurrent setting is absurd: Vladimir and Estragon remain in the same non-specified place and wait for Godot, who never shows, day after day. They partake in this activity, this waiting, during both Act I and Act II, and we are led to infer that if Samuel Beckett had composed an Act III, Vladimir and Estragon would still be waiting on the country road beside the tree. Of course, no humans would do such things. The characters' actions in relation to setting are unreal-distorted, absurd. However, it is through this distortion and only through this distortion that we can guess at the importance and the details of the evasive figure...
Samuel Beckett may have renounced the use of Christian motifs in Waiting for Godot, but looking at the character of Lucky proves otherwise. We can see Lucky as a representative figure of Christ as his actions in the play carry a sort of criticism of Christianity. His role suggests that the advantages of Christianity have declined to the point where they no longer help humanity at all.
On November 12th, 2016, Clayton State University produced a two hour play titled Waiting for Godot in the Clayton State Theater located in the Arts and Sciences building, room G132. Waiting for Godot is a play by Samuel Beckett, in which two characters, known as Estragon and Vladimir, wait for the arrival of someone named Godot who never arrives. The play was live five times at the Clayton State University. Each time the show was live it made a connection with the Black Lives Matter movement, in other words, waiting for justice to prevail. The diverse fundamentals of the play helped me understand what was going on in the play, but in some ways I was not quite sure what was going on. The play, Waiting For Godot, is centred around two men, Estragon and Vladimir, who are waiting for a Mr. Godot, of whom they know little. Estragon admits himself that he may never recognize Mr. Godot, "Personally I wouldn't know him if I ever saw him." (p.23). Estragon also remarks, "… we hardly know him." (p.23), which illustrates to an audience that the identity of Mr. Godot is irrelevant, as little information is ever given throughout the play about this indefinable Mr. X. What is an important element of the play is the act of waiting for someone or something that never arrives. Western readers may find it natural to speculate on the identity of Godot because of their inordinate need to find answers to questions. Beckett however suggests that the identity of Godot is in itself a rhetorical question. It is possible to stress the for in the waiting for …: to see the purpose of action in two men with a mission, not to be deflected from their compulsive task.
Closure is a very important aspect of a narrative. Closure or the lack of it accomplishes the goal of a creating a text which readers would want to continue reading to find out the ending, it helps to lead the reader on. The term “closure” according to Abbott is “best understood as something we look for in narrative, as desire that authors understand and often expend art to satisfy or frustrate” (Abbott, 57).In the play Waiting for Godot, the lack of closure is very evident throughout it. This play significantly follows the hermeneutic code, the level of questions or answers. This code has allowed for the author to grasp the attention of the readers, due to the reason people like to find and understand closures, but also allowing the author to not give a closure. Moreover, the type of play, which is an absurdist, is an important part of the reason behind this play lacking a closure. The definition of absurdist is: “A writer, performer, etc., whose work presents an audience or readership with absurdities, typically in portraying the futility of human struggle in a senseless and inexplicable world; esp. a writer or proponent of absurdist drama” (OED). The absurdist genre allows for the play to not directly answer the questions, but to leave it open so that the reader can interpret the actions to their liking, just as they would interpret situations in real life, where no events are written in stone. The dialogues and the whole picture of the play allows for easy examination as to how the above claims work out. Using the hermeneutic code, and the absurdist genre, along with a lack of closure, the author has written Waiting For Godot a play written to make the audience think.
Religion is a way to combat despair, tragedy, trauma, or the everyday life; it is essentially a wonderful means of hope. However many people after World War Two began to question the importance of religion. Samuel Beckett wrote the play, Wait For Godot, during the twentieth century, a time where Absurdism thrived. The play conveys messages of time, duality, and choices. Although Beckett utilizes religion throughout the play, there are other themes that people rarely discuss due to the audience easily discovering the religious message of the play. Despite the constant religious allusions, religion does not need to have relevance in finding a meaning in the play.
The setting is the next day at the same time. Estragon's boots and Lucky's hat are still on the stage. Vladimir enters and starts to sing until Estragon shows up barefoot. Estragon is upset that Vladimir was singing and happy even though he was not there. Both admit that they feel better when alone but convince themselves they are happy when together. They are still waiting for Godot.
How Does Beckett Use Time and Repetition in Waiting For Godot to Represent The Never Ending Cycles in Life?
Time can feel as an illusion, something untouchable. Time can also fly by when attention is not being paid. On the contrary, waiting in life can make time feel as if it is slowly stopping. So do not waste time waiting, but act instead. Time is one of the most precious things in life and every second counts. No one can control the time, but time can control people.
The world of Existentialism is a result of the destruction of individualism and the deterioration of the human condition. As the characters display helplessness and a lack of identity, they are exposed to a universe that is far beyond their capabilities and understanding. Through their meaningless action, they go about their lives with no purpose. Although Waiting for Godot is not an existential piece because Samuel Beckett himself did not identify as an existentialist, the play contains traits of existentialism in the characters themselves, the reoccurring theme of waiting over time, and the overall hidden meaning and message behind the play.
Vladimir and Estragon spend all their time through out the book waiting for "Godot." It is unclear to the audience if either of them have ever seen Godot or even talked to him.

Written during late 1948 and early 1949 and premiered as a play in 1953 as En attendant Godot, Beckett coupled these devices with minimalism and absurdity in order to create the tragicomedy known to English speakers as Waiting for Godot. True to its title, Waiting for Godot is the tale of a pair of best friends known as Vladimir (Didi) and Estragon (Gogo) who are waiting for the character the audience comes to know as Godot to appear. Throughout Beckett’s play Waiting for Godot, Samuel Beckett alludes to the monotheistic religion of Christianity through symbols, dialogue, and characters to reveal the heavy invisible influence of God in the daily life of man.
Although Samuel Beckett's tragicomedy, Waiting for Godot, has no definite meaning or interpretation, the play acts as a statement of hopelessness regarding human existence. Debate surrounds the play because, due to its simplicity, almost any interpretation is valid. The main characters, Vladimir and Estragon, are aging men who must wait for a person, being, or object named Godot, but this entity never appears to grace the men with this presence. Both characters essentially demonstrate how one must go through life when hope is nonexistent as they pointlessly attempt to entertain themselves with glum conversation in front of a solitary tree. The Theater of the Absurd, a prevalent movement associated with Waiting for Godot, serves as the basis for the message of hopelessness in his main characters. Samuel Beckett's iconic Waiting for Godot and his perception of the characteristics and influence of the Theater of the Absurd illustrate the pointlessness and hopelessness regarding existence. In the play, boredom is mistaken for hopelessness because the men have nothing to do, as they attempt to occupy themselves as, for some reason, they need to wait for Godot. No hope is present throughout the two-act play with little for Estragon and Vladimir to occupy their time while they, as the title indicates, wait for Godot.
