Waiting for Godot is a tragicomedy play that is both funny and depressing. During the play we are trying to figure out who or what is Godot. We are constantly asking ourselves what are we waiting for and why. Throughout the play we follow Vladimir and Estragon on their daily escapades to find out if today is the day they meet Godot. We witness the suffering that Vladimir and Estragon are put through each day while they are anxiously waiting for something. Vladimir and Estragon seem to be very sad and lonely. It is hard to get passed the sadness to be able to see anything funny in this play. Waiting for Godot is a prime example of what is known as the theater of the absurd. The play is filled with foolish lines, wordplay, meaningless dialogue, and characters who unexpectedly shift emotions and forget everything, ranging from their own identities to what happened yesterday. The boy makes Vladimir feel like Godot is definitely coming. The boy is more like a visionary character that reflects Vladimir’s wishes for Godot. Estragon already knows that Godot is eventually death. The boy seems to be an angel. He is the only one who has actually seen Godot. I think that the boy is a prophet sent to bring death to Vladimir and Estragon. The boy is their glimmer of hope that death is on its way. Pretty soon they won 't have to suffer through the day anymore. There are some small parts in the play that are definitely funny. I can’t get passed the undertone of death. When you are doing mundane things to pass the time away death seems like it’s imminent. Vladimir and Estragon are stuck doing the same things over and over every day. They have nothing new to do that can get their mind off of Godot. Each day they think of doing something else but they don’t want to miss Godot. They will never miss Godot, death is coming, they can’t hide from
