Worrying about school, studying for tests or exams, having fun, playing sports, listening to music and most of all enjoying your life. And then suddenly. You need to know about politics. All these questions start piling on top of each other and they leave you constantly worrying about something that you should not have to worry about until you are 18. Today I'm going to be talking to you about whether or not the voting age should be lowered to 16. I strongly believe that it should not be lowered to 16 because 16 and 17-year-olds lack political knowledge and engagement, …show more content…
A voting age is a minimum age that by law, a person must reach to be able to vote in a public election. Typically, the age is set at 18 years, however, ages as low as 16 and as high as 21 exist. The current minimum voting age in Australia is 18 years of age. A reduction was proposed in 2005 in Canada and New South Wales, Australia, but these proposals were not adopted. Currently, there are only ten countries in the world with a voting age of …show more content…
16 and 17-year-olds cannot legally gamble, get a tattoo, buy alcohol, appear in an adult court, and many other things, so why should they be able to vote? It just doesn't make sense. It's inconsistent. 72% of respondents in the 2010 Australian Election Study stated that the voting age should "definitely stay at 18", so this proves that many people agree the voting age should stay at 18.
In conclusion, Australia is among the highest in the world to oppose the voting age being lowered, currently at 90%. Lowering the voting age is not a good idea as 16 and 17-year-olds lack political knowledge and engagement, are highly influenced by those around them and allowing them to vote would be very inconsistent. As a well-known saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix
Right now, the minimum voting age is eighteen. While this is a good starting point where some young adults can have the ability to vote, teens
In “You’re 16, You’re Beautiful and You’re a Voter,” author Anya Kamenetz states her belief that the voting age should be lowered to sixteen. Kamenetz gives several premises to her argument.
I believe that 18 years old is too young for a citizen to vote. I think this because most 18 year old citizens are still in high school. Students should be focusing on graduating and getting good grade, and not political arguments. I think it is okay for them to be exposed to the debates on their local news, but they shouldn't have to worry about who to vote for on top of school work. I understand the leaders of our country most likely what young people to have a say in who their leaders are, however we should be letting the student be focused on school so they can be ready to vote.
The age at which one is eligible to vote has been a source of heated discussions and debates. Should the voting age be lowered? Should it remain at age 18?
As becoming the age of 18, people has the chance to start voting. People 18-24 have a lower percentage of voting than other ages. This is because the youth vote has changed over time and the reasons why the youth vote doesn’t want to vote. I will vote in the upcoming elections when I turn of
If letting 16-17 year old citizens vote could have change the turnout of voters in this past election, there would have been a difference in choosing who the next president. I know for sure that if the voting age was 16 there would have been more people at the polls then ever. I agree with having the legal voting age to 16 because there are a lot of students at this age that are focusing more on how they could change the fate of their home.
Today in America, less than half of young voters between the ages of 18 and 24 vote (TheBestColleges.org). What most of these new adults fail to realize, is that their government depends on them to vote and elect new leaders to represent their country. Many of them make excuses to avoid voting, when really, they benefit most from voting.
I think lowering the voting age to 16 will help teenagers feel more free. A lot of people want the voting age to be lowered because if 16 year old’s can drive, can join military forces, and have to pay taxes then they should be able to vote. Also the National Youth Rights Association said, “ Youth
I think that the legal age of voting should be age 21 and older because when they are at least 21 they are able to make good decisions and choose which one would be the best President. When they are at age 21 they are at the drinking age legally. And that means that they can make big decisions and be responsible and they should be the ones to be to vote.
Teens are old enough at 16 and 17 to have photo IDs and be tried as adults for serious crimes. It's a double standard to deny them the right to vote while giving them the same penalties as adults. (Should the Voting Age be Lowered? Teens are unfairly treated if they aren’t given the representation of a vote. “Just like all other Americans, young Americans pay taxes. In fact, they pay a lot of taxes. According to the IRS, teens pay an estimated $9.7 billion dollars in sales taxes alone, not to mention many millions of taxes on income.” (The Pros and Cons of Lowering the Voting Age). Teens can make a claim for representation when they’re taxed by a government that they have no say in. “Politicians represent various constituencies. As of today, young people are no one's constituency. Why should politicians care about the needs and wishes of youth when they have no ability to vote for or against them?” (The Pros and Cons of Lowering the Voting Age). Teen’s interests should be protected just like those of every other citizen. That doesn’t negate their inability to make rational voting decisions, however.
At first the minimum voting age was being considered was 16 years. The last debate dealt with lowering the voting age to 13 years. Reducing the minimum voting age from 18 to 13 years has a lot of disadvantages with this change. Disadvantages of lowering the voting age to 13 are there are important decisions that a thirteen year old can't make. Voting decisions are very important and a 13 year old
Mr Tully said that “we must get our young involved at an early age”. Ed Miliband announced three years ago that Labour was in favour of lowering the Voting age. So are the Liberal Democrats, which included votes for 13 years old in their 2010 manifesto, but the conservative Party has historically been opposed.
Perhaps if legislation required campaign experience, young men and women would obtain knowledge and interest in our political system. Political participation is pivotal because these young men and women will be directing our political system in the future. However, lowering voting age is not the solution. Voting is a tremendous responsibility, requiring information about candidates/issues. Therefore, most eighteen-year-olds are capable of making wise, mature choices.
Wouldn’t you love to vote at the age of sixteen-year-olds instead of eighteen? You would actually get a say for who gets to become president. A lot of people say that when you’re sixteen you are too young to vote because you aren’t educated enough. Although, a lot sixteen-year-olds say they should be allowed to vote. The polls would increase by a lot too if sixteen through seventeen year olds could vote also. According to debatewise.org
The right to vote is something that has been in this country since the beginning. The country was founded on having a choice and we get to express that through voting. The legal voting age is 18. Many think that the age should be changed, but what should they change it to. Some say to raise it and some say to lower it. I don’t think it should be age but contribution to society.
