Wernher Magnus Maximilian Freiherr von Brain, born March 23, 1912 in Wirsitz, Germany, was an astounding visionary who was one of the foremost masterminds behind the science that we now call rocketry. Von Braun was one of three children to his parents Magnus von Braun, and Emmy von Quistorp whom were at a high status in Germany due to his father's job as a member in the German National People's Party . As an adult Werner von Braun would be part of many endeavors and social movements that would lead to the advancement of humankind forever. As a child von Braun’s mother, Emmy, was a tremendous influence to him because of one gift she gave him that would spark his enthusiasm towards science forever, this gift was a telescope. From that point on science was his life. Before this point Mr. Braun did terribly at math and science but with the newfound interest he began to take his academic studies seriously, this caused him to become one of the top students in his school, Hermann Lietz school at Ettrsburg castle. By 1937 he was the head of the Peenemunde rocket center and in charge of the Nazi rocket program. Here Wernher would become one of the main developers of the V-2 rocket which was the first manmade object to go into space. The rocket would be used as a retaliation device against allied cities whom had bombed Germany in the past. When the allied forces heard of what could and would happen they immediately took charge. Von Braun decided that the United States would be the most likely to use his work for space travel, so naturally von Braun and his colleagues surrendered to them in hopes of space
