I’ve always felt that animals are the purest spirits in the world. They don’t fake or hide their feelings, and they are the most loyal creatures on Earth and somehow we humans think we’re smarter. I chose this topic about the canine because, some of these canines risk their life’s to protect dog’s best friend.
Australian Shepherd, also known as Spanish Shepherd, New Mexican Shepherd, or California Shepherd, breed of herding dog developed in the United States (Encarta). Its ancestors probably were Australian dogs bred for herding livestock (Braund 106). Sheepherders who emigrated from the Basque region of Spain to the United States had these dogs shipped to California when the United States imported sheep from Australia in the 19th century (Palika 23).
The dog is a unique beast. Loyal and affectionate, if somewhat bizarrely built, today’s dogs are a far cry from the wild wolves from which they emerged. Whether fluffy, naked, cock-eyed, or bow-legged, each dog is an ample prototype of its kind. The very idea that such a cooperative creature could spring forth from such a ruthless predator is astounding by itself. The fact that the multitude of breeds (340, according to the World Canine Organization (Melina, 2014)) could starburst forth from a single point begs investigation. How, indeed, did it come to be that there are so many different breeds of dog?
Take a moment and picture a dog in your head. What do you see? You may see many different things depending on your own personal encounters with the species. There are many types of dogs out there. Some small, some large, long-haired or short-haired. There are many variances in what a dog can look like. One thing that does not change, or should not change, is the importance for every dog in this world to be given love and affection, no matter its characteristics. This is what leads me to believe that the obsession with producing and owning purebreds needs to come to a halt. Continuing to create these so-called “best dogs” is dangerous to not only the purebred’s health, but also devalues mixed breeds and can cost them their lives in animal shelters where they may never escape. My interest in this topic caused me to look into seeing what other people felt about it.
Word count includes Annotated Bibliography. Throughout the world, there are many different countries that contain diverse cultures, religions, and lifestyles. There are however certain aspects within these countries and cultures that act as a common ground between one another. One dominant aspect is the existence of dogs within these cultures.
The most common dog breed for the Iditarod is the sled dog. Most sled dogs are just normal dogs, but they have to have these certain things; a natural ‘fur’ coat, has to have an ECG evaluation(for heart abnormalities), must have a microchip implanted, and all dogs must be de wormed. Some of the dogs may be; Alaskan husky, Alaskan Malamute, Alusky, Canadian Eskimo dog, Chinook, Eurohound, Greenland dog, Kugsha dog, Mackenzie River husky, Samoyed, Seppala Siberian sleddog, and a Siberian husky. Most dogs can be a sled dog. So, most dogs are a very common dog breed for the Iditarod. The sled dog is the most common dog for the Iditarod.
There are many breeds of dogs to choose from some of the most common are golden retriever, German shepherd, and Labrador retriever. Many people can pick almost any breed they are looking for though. The common breeds I pointed out are used because of their intelligence, willingness to work, and their mobility. The dogs that help are really filling a hole that these people have.
There are a lot of facts and information about pit bulls that the public does not know. The media blows things way out of proportion with this breed of dog and doing simple research can shed some light. “There are three main types of ‘pit bulls,’ they are the Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, and American Staffordshire Terriers” (Pit Bull Rescue Center). The Staffordshire bull terrier is originally from England. When it was brought over to the states it was bred with other terriers and the American Staffordshire came to be. Often times people classify dogs that look a certain way as pit bulls, when in fact they are an entirely different breed or a mix of some sort.
A breed that is native to Japan, this hunting dog dates all the way back to the 17th century. The name “Akita” comes from the mountain region where the breed originates. It is difficult to correctly identify each dog by breed- some are mixed and tests are expensive.
Their names are Zeus and Hera and they are some of the kindest, goofiest dogs I have lived with. My dogs love to play and cuddle more than anything. They don’t bark at people walking past the house, or at other pets and animals when they go on their daily walks. To me it is absolutely ridiculous that these sweet dogs are hated so widely across the country because PEOPLE gave them a bad reputation. The Breed of American Pit Bull Terriers is considered a “fight dog” breed today because criminals use them for illegal affairs such as protecting drugs and dog fighting. Pit bulls are extremely tough dogs, but it is not in their nature to fight. Fight dogs are beaten, abused, starved, and left in cages until they are sent to fight another dog. They are trained to act out this behavior that is not seen elsewhere. Humans train dogs to be viscous. There are rare cases where dogs are overly aggressive, however, in most of those instances the dog is a product of incest

Several dogs were brought by the British to Labrador, which is located in the Canadian province of Newfoundland. These dogs, over the course of time, were bred into the modern Labrador Retriever.
