Vivid Emotion “Colors,” a song written and performed by Halsey, is a metaphorical piece about the struggles of a relationship. Badlands, the album this song is featured on, was released in February of 2016 and has been presented at the MTV music awards. “Colors” is a favorite among the fans and one of the many reasons Halsey has sold out shows on her tour. In this electropop song, she relates her relationship to colors, which symbolize the emotions and feelings felt throughout the course of a real relationship she was in. Additionally, “Colors” describes the process in which the relationship became spoiled and bland, but also how she kept attempting to maintain the relationship’s liveliness. Overall, “Colors” is a meaningful song because it presents a lesson about the importance of knowing that a relationship is worth fighting for, but not when only one partner is the only one fighting. The figurative language present in this song contributes to the emotions in this song. For example, the line, “You 're dripping like a saturated sunrise/ You 're spilling like an overflowing sink,” is a use of simile in the song. Although the first line has a particularly negative connotation, this line references the fact that her partner is becoming hard to handle, insinuated through the mention of saturation. Also, the mention of sunrise may signify the beginning of a relationship, just as a sunrise is the beginning of a day. However, the lyric “you’re spilling like an overflowing sink” also adds to the negative connotation of the first line.
