Visual Communication: Advertising There is a constant interaction between an organism and the external environment. It must be able to detect changes in the surroundings and make proper adjustments so as to increase chances of survival. Most living things including green plants and even some unicellular organisms are sensitive to light. But relatively few organisms are capable of vision; that is the ability to form pictures of images of the outside world. One of the creatures blessed with the sense of vision is man. It is also one of the lucky few organisms of God, which is able to detect colors. Since the beginning of time man has been fascinated by the variations in the environment accompanied by the changes in the images and his attraction towards and repulsion from various appearances of organisms. Man has been on this Earth for many years since the eviction of Adam from the heavens. During these years he has learned a lot about how to treat different things by simply looking at them. Example he knows that a prick in any form will hurt him and he does not know this by the help of the sense of smell or hearing but simply by looking at the prick’s sharp tip. Therefore it can be concluded that a man is very much dependant on his sense of vision and is also significantly influenced by it. With the discovery of visual images carried by radio waves in 1926 followed by the invention of the television man has been endlessly entranced by the advertisement displayed on the TV by the manufacturer to attract consumers. During a TV drama ““Spring is Unlikely to Come…” translated it was observed that the 35 minute program is financed by 17 different sponsors who displayed 64 commercials during a 25 minute period of time. The best commercials were those, which were short but succeeded in promoting their message. Lengthy ads tend to bore the viewer quickly. The channel most wisely didn’t give any ad, which would interest any men like for shaving cream or shaving blades etc. There was however the exception of a single ad of a car. It is therefore observed that the ads even if ignored leave a message at the back of the head and these come back to the person unconsciously during shopping. Thus Gyan C. Other commercials, according to Solomon, thrive on fitting in. The Chevrolet commercials have a slogan that makes one feel to be American, one must by American. Chevrolet's slogan is 'The Heartbeat of America.'; Car commercials also have targeted markets also. For a truck commercial, they will show a truck getting all dirty and going through an obstacle. This is targeted towards men because most men find these things appealing. For a luxury car commercial the mood or the commercial is nice and pleasant, the car is on a country road (representing one driving to there country home). These cars were once targeted towards upper class people, but now they are targeted towards everyone according to Solomon. A commercial strives on the ever so enduring drive for Americans to have better things and climb up the social status ladder. Marketers know this, so they place normal, average, everyday looking people in their commercials to let middle class people know that they can have the car, too.
People come across hundreds of advertisements daily without giving it a second thought. Advertisements are presented to people by TV commercials, magazine ads, billboards, radio commercials etc. They surround people in almost every aspect of life. These companies use consumer psychology to invoke emotions or feelings in the consumers to make them want the product being advertised. An extremely effective way to appeal to consumers emotions is the advertisement tool of short commercials. The company Johnson’s appeals to customers very well in their advertisements. They use the Nurture appeal to attract mothers/care takers to take an interest in their products.
Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
While some commercials may seem like they are trying too hard and essentially forcing consumers to buy their product, most advertisements have the same approach, hegemony. Instead of straight out saying “buy my product or we will hunt you down”, instead, companies will take their audience into consideration and move forward by attracting that specific group. Wall Street, for example, targets undergraduates because they can be easily persuaded and manipulated as most of them are still assimilating into the transition from high school to college; So, everything is new and open to interpretation. By exposing students to the lavishness and extravagance of an investment banker’s lifestyle, investment bankers can hook students and leave them yearning for more, as “they quickly become used to the respect, status, and impressive nods from peers” (Ho 179). Like getting addicted to a drug, these students are dependent on inclusion of investment banking when exposed. Because this is so ubiquitous, it is hard to notice. It is like the breathing, it is only when a person directs their attention to it that they start noticing it. This can be related to hegemony, it plays a role in a person’s daily life, but it is only when something goes wrong that a person will start investigating what went wrong. Everyday we are exposed to millions of different visual messages, which tell us what to eat, what to wear, what to watch and what to listen. No matter how hard we try to avoid being influenced by these directives, we can only protect ourselves to a certain point. After that, no interpretive power can be helpful. Media then leads us to a path that ends up in the same department store with our neighbour, with whom we have probably never spoken to before. Ironically, we are holding the same pair of socks or CDs, and we might never want to recall the TV commercial that had opened the gates to this path.
Visual representation of reality, as seen through mass media, is acknowledged by sociologists to be influential in shaping people's views of the world. Our everyday realities are articulated mostly by what we see in the media. The role of advertising in this interpretation of reality is crucial. The target audience's self-identification with the images being a basic prerequisite for an advertisement's effectiveness, makes advertising one of the most important factors in the building of behavior models and values systems. The way a certain notion is managed at a visual level determines how people will perceive this notion and whether they will identify with it or not. Meaning is encoded in the structure of the images, which thus become potent cultural symbols for human behavior. The framing and composition of the image, the setting, the symbolic attributes and every other element in its structure, all are engaged in the effective presentation of the underlying notion.
In the end, I find that Robert Scholes is correct in his conclusion that commercials hold a certain power, with which they can alter our decisions whether or not to buy a product. Through visual fascination, we are offered images we could never have on our own; through narrativity, we are told what to think and how to think it; and finally through cultural relativity we connect with the rest of the world. When these three forces are combined by advertising, our brains cannot help themselves, we allow ourselves to become brainwashed by corporate America. This is why Robert Scholes feels that Reading a Video Text should be taught in school.
The video describes how our society may not even care about the product being advertised, but we still read the billboard or watch the commercial. Also mentioned was the use of colors in a commercial, the marketing effects in politics, and even market research obtained by studying different cults. Frontline takes an in-depth look at the multibillion-dollar “persuasion industries” of advertising and how this rhetoric affects everyone. So whether this is in the form of a television commercial or a billboard, pathos, logos, and ethos can be found in all advertisements.
The better the advertisement, the more customers they can potentially get to purchase their goods and/ or services. Therefore the ad for the Samsung television will interest a wide array of people. This ad contains many attracting features and uses its words cunningly in order to make its product sound much more exciting and much better than any television would ever be.
Advertising generally tries to sell the things that consumers want even if they should not wish for them. Adverting things that consumers do not yearn for is not effective use of the advertiser’s money. A majority of what advertisers sell consists of customer items like food, clothing, cars and services-- things that people desire to have. On the other hand it is believed by some advertising experts that the greatest influence in advertising happens in choosing a brand at the point of sale.
The Illusion of Advertisements Advertisements are pieces of art or literary work that are meant to make the viewer or reader associate with the activity or product represented in the advertisement. According to Kurtz and Dave (2010), in so doing, they aim at either increasing the demand of the product, to inform the consumer of the existence, or to differentiate that product from other existing ones in the market.
