“A virtuous person is better than virtue and a vicious person is worse than vice,” Hazrat Ali says. Odysseus, in the Odyssey, contains many virtuous characteristics, which include Wisdom, piety, self-control, courage, and justice. Unlike Odysseus, Achilles, in “Troy”, involve hubris acts. Therefore, these characters are completely different from each other. After reading both the Odyssey and watching “Troy”, one can sense a strong understanding between the two character’s virtues. Odysseus displays many virtues on his journey back home. Being constantly called a virtuous man by the people throughout his kingdom, he absorbs it and used it to the best of his ability. Fortunately, Odysseus received the help of the people that he trusted, such as Telemachus, to come up with a plan to have the suitors removed. As plans went underway, they managed to slaughter all the suitors, as well as the other characters, that betrayed him. The characters that did not betray him were able to live, as well as the famous singer because of the significance he made towards the community. Achilles, in the movie “Troy”, did not have the same qualities that Odysseus obtained. Wisdom was not involved as Achilles tied Hector’s body to the back of his chariot and drug him around. He did this because he was blinded by excessive glory, and wanted the people to know the terrors he is capable of. Excessive glory was a large majority of Achilles’ life.
Piety is not shown throughout the movie. Nonetheless, Achilles acts like the “god of war” because of his war skills. Following back to the amount of glory that Achilles thought he had, he did not see any reason to thank the gods. Achilles took away multiple soldiers’ lives and never thought twice about it. To him, his life consisted of wanting his name to be remembered and glorified. The proper justice was not served with Achilles, but there was justice within Achilles to give Hector back so that they could perform the proper burial for him. Relating to virtue of wisdom, I think I am more like Odysseus. I believe this to be true because I am known by my family and friends as the “smart” or “wise” one, focused on the decisions I make in my everyday lifestyle. The other virtues that I find myself having, that Odysseus obtains as well, is self-control and courage. I believe I have these two because of the occupation I am involved with at my work, regarding angry customers. I have the courage to ask questions when needed. The virtues I am lacking is piety and justice. Piety is not a strong division for me because of the beliefs I have when it comes to the gods. I do not believe that the world came from one or more gods, and the Earth was created a different way. Justice is also lacking from my lifestyle because I do not give everything their proper due. This is difficult for me because the proper due is not clear as other things are in my
