Virgin Airlines begins with entrepreneur Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group. Branson was born in Surrey, England. Edward James Branson, his father worked as a barrister and Eve Branson, his mother was employed as a flight attendant. As a young child, Branson struggled with his educational studies because of dyslexia (Richard Branson Biography). After nearly failing all-boys Scaitcliffe School, he transferred to boarding school in Stowe, Buckinghamshire, England. As at seventeen year old high school dropout in the 1960s, Branson launches a magazine. A youth-culture based magazine called Student was published and January 26, 1968 the first issue was handed out (Richard Branson Biography). For students and ran by students the publication sold $8000 worth of advertising in the first edition. Around 50,000 copies were given for free, which Branson covered the costs with the advertising. (Richard Branson Biography). In the 1970s, Branson expands into the music business. By selling cut price records by post, the business becomes Virgin Mail Order which develops into Virgin Record Shop in 1971.Virgin Record Shop opens on 24 Oxford Street in London. Tangerine Dream was the first record Sold ("The history of Virgin”). By 1972, Virgin Record Shop becomes Britain’s first residential recording studio. This opens its doors up to the artists known as Sandy Denny, John Cale, Gong, Faust and The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. Virgin Record shop later becomes Virgin Records label and Mike Oldfield recorded his first single “Tubular Bells” with the help of Branson ("The history of Virgin"). The Lufthansa Heist was a robbery that took place at the John F. Kennedy International Airport; the people (players) robbed five million dollars at the time of the robbery. The total amount of money robbed to todays’ date is estimated to be around eighteen million dollars and three million dollars in jewelry. The heist was planned by Jimmy Burke and carried out by a number of people. A van would be used to transport the cash and another car would accompany the van to run interference should something happen.
It all started in 1924, at Macon, Georgia and back then it was not called Delta. It went by the name of Huff-Daland Dusters. Its main purpose was for aerial crop dusting to fight against insect infestation on cotton fields. The idea of deploying chemical from above to treat the infestation problem was introduced by a government entomologist Dr. Coad. After a brief research period, a contract was awarded to Huff-Daland Manufacturing to design an aerial delivery method. Huff-Daland designed and produced duster biplanes based on the Petrel 5, which was used by the navy. In 1923, Mr. Woolman, an agricultural engineer came to Huff-Daland from The Department of Agriculture. Three years later the company moved to Monroe, Louisiana. Since the crop dusting business was periodic, Mr. Woolman looked for other ways to maintain their business practices. As a result, they decided to add Peru into the mix since the seasons were opposite. During his mission in Peru, he saw another opportunity to expand the company’s business, by providing passenger air travels service. After while things started to go down hill for the company due to the political change in Peru. As a result, Mr. Woolman sold most of the crop dusting equipment and some of the Air travel assets to Peruvian company (“Huff-Daland Duster,” n.d.).

In decades past, WestJet expanded its destination network form all western Canadian cities to international scope. During this development period, IT played a important role. For example, electronic ticket is used in the airline reservation system. However, some IT-related issues also hinders the company’s development.

The Airline Industry is a fascinating market. It has been one of the few industries to reach astounding milestones. For example, over 200 airlines have gone out of business since deregulation occurred in 1978. Currently, more than 50% of the airlines in the industry are operating under Chapter 11 regulations. Since 9/11, four of the six large carriers have filed for and are currently under bankruptcy court protection. Since 9/11 the industry has lost over $30 billion dollars, and this loss continues to increase. Despite the fact that the airline industry is in a state of despair, JetBlue has become the golden example, a glimpse of what the industry could be.
Spirit Airlines has long been considered an unorthodox airline. They, of course, address all four P’s in their marketing strategy; however, they focus a large amount of their effort on price and promotion. They focus on cutting price through “unbundling”. They focus on promotion through taking advantage of social issues and breaking news. Many advertisements and deals promoted by Spirit have given the public a definite shock-factor. Spirit has made two objectives very clear: they are furious at getting the customer the lowest fare possible by any means necessary, and they will similarly use any means necessary to get those potential customers to notice those fares. Such a blatant marketing strategy works. Even going up against some big competition, Spirit finds ways to be competitive and successful in flagrant fashion.
The topic in which I chose to do a scrapbook on was “How the government affects the airline industry in Canada”. Specifically I chose articles that related to the aftermaths of the September 11th tragedy. This event affected airlines in an enormous manner. Many airlines were facing economical problems and in turned asked the government for assistance. As a result, Canada 3000, which was Canada’s second largest airline carrier filed for bankruptcy protection on October 11th.
The seventh largest major domestic airline in the United States (US), Southwest Airlines, is commonly known or referred to as a low-cost carrier. Southwest Airlines is the only major airline that provides short-haul, point-to-point service in the United States. In fact it was the first airline of its type ever started; it has become the archetypical low-cost airline. The idea has proven itself so well, that other start-up airlines have based their company strategies upon the basics of Southwest. Today, there are two other low-cost air carriers (the other two airlines are considered national airlines and not major airlines) that are actively and aggressively competing with Southwest Airlines for business and profit turning. The three American low-cost air carriers are currently posting profits even in light of the US economy’s current state of affairs, with Southwest Airlines first, JetBlue second, and Air Tran third, in profits. How is this possible when the major six airlines are reporting losses of millions and millions of dollars each quarter? The answer to this question begins about 30 years ago.
Also, Southwest is renowned in the airline industry for its short turnaround time on arrivals and departures. And since people's biggest concern nowadays is money and time, having low price airline tickets to cater their traveling needs in a shorter period of time will surely satisfy them. Moreover, aside from the low prices offered, what attracts customers is Southwest’s way of dealing with them. The employees of the airline treat their customers well and really listen to their needs. Southwest Airlines is also well-known for having a very productive and loyal workforce.
JetBlue Airways entered the market in 2000 from a position of financial strength, leadership capability and several rare advantage points uncommon to others in the industry: 1) David Neeleman, the founder, had several years of industry experience as a result of having successfully launched and sold an airline (Morris Air), bringing both explicit and tacit knowledge into the his new venture; 2) Neeleman was afforded the opportunity to work directly with his idol, Herb Kelleher, at Southwest Airlines (the king of the low-cost leaders) after Southwest purchased Morris Air from Neeleman; and 3) Substantial financial support from venture capitalists who had funded Neeleman's previous ventures and were more than willing to support and capitalize on his idea for a new low-cost passenger airline.
Southwest Airlines is competing with "Shuttle by United" head to head in about 9 routes. United has just announced that it is discontinuing its Oakland - Ontario route and hiking the fares in all the 14 routes by $10, which calculated to be 14.5% increase in the fare. Southwest has to respond effectively to these unexpected developments and has to act accordingly while maintaining their current low fare image and increasing their daily operating profits. We have considered the elasticity of the market to be 1.15.
In the airline industry, Southwest Airlines is considered a true innovator. By shaking up the rules of flying and improving upon inefficient industry norms, Southwest has quickly grown by leaps and bounds. From the very start, Southwest Airlines' goals were to make a profit, achieve job security for every employee, and make flying affordable for more people (Southwest,2007). Southwest has not strayed from these goals. It does not buy huge aircrafts, fly international routes or try to go head to head with the major carriers; and thanks to a great planning, Southwest airlines has become the most successful airline company in the U.S., if not the world.
Southwest Airlines faced many barriers to entry from the fierce competition of other airlines in the industry. Though competition was fierce, Southwest Airlines managed to succeed by doing things differently. Their mission was to provide affordable air travel to those who would not normally fly. Contradictory to the rest of the airline industry, Southwest maintained a profit while keeping its fares low. Southwest was unique to the industry in two ways. They focused on the short haul traveler and used a point-to-point method of flight connections.
Virgin Atlantic’s operates from several hub airports in London. Its current home base airport is located at Heathrow in London, England. Currently, the company has two other major hubs in Gatwick and Manchester. However, Heathrow presently is at full capacity, and Gatwick is reaching full capacity in the near future. While various options are available, Virgin Atlantic and London’s commissioned officials are working to reach an agreement on the long-term solution to benefit the airline and the economy.
While sitting in Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport, one cannot help but to notice and feel an overwhelming dominant presence of one particular airline. Delta as we know it today, traces its roots way back to 1924. Huff Daland Dusters was founded as the world’s first aerial crop dusting organization. In 1928 the company became Delta Air Service, and the following year Delta carried its first passengers over a route stretching from Dallas, Texas to Jackson, Mississippi with stops in Shreveport and Monroe, Louisiana. In 1941, the company moved its headquarters from Monroe to Atlanta, Georgia.
