Did you know violent video games cause our kids to murder? This is probably one of the alleged claims that people, whom think violent video games contribute to youth violence, would provide. There has been an ongoing dispute towards whether or not violent video games contribute to youth violence. There are very intriguing articles on procon.org regarding violent video games. Proponents of this proposal believe that violent video games do indeed, contribute to youth violence. While very distinctly the “con” stance believes violent video games do not contribute to youth violence. In my opinion, the “con” side makes the much stronger argument on procon.org.
I believe the con side has a stronger argument because they provide convincing evidence to prove the opposing side wrong. For example, in “CON Contribute to Youth Violence” a strong piece of evidence is shown through the lines, “A short-term increase in arousal and aggression does not mean a child is going to leave his or her house and commit a violent act.” This is conveying that the opposing stance provides no proof towards the fact that they are not just providing alleged claims. The proponents of this argument provide a ploy towards there evidence, although they have no proof why there evidence proves violent video games cause violence in youth. The con aide has stronger arguments and is obviously the better side of this dispute, even with its weak evidence.
The “con” side still has a stronger argument even with its weaknesses. For example, in “CON Contribute to Youth Violence” a weak piece of evidence is given stated through the lines, “Violent games do not cause youth to be violence. Instead, youth that predisposed to be violent seek out violent entertainment such as video games.” This example is conveying weakness because it is demonstrated more as an opinion that can easily be proved wrong. They state that youth whom are predisposed to violence seek out violent entertainment, but they have no proof or evince which proves this is the case towards the argument regarding violent video games causing violence. Even with its flaws the “con” stance makes the better argument, although the proponent side did provide compelling evidence.
The proponents of the argument, even with the weaker argument did provide strong evidence. For example in, “PRO Contribute to Youth Violence” a strong piece of evidence is given through the lines, “A 2009 study found that it takes up to four minutes for the level of aggressive thoughts and feelings of children to return to normal after playing violent video games.
The two sides of this argument are the pro and anti gun groups. The anti-gun groups main goals range from more stringent gun control laws to a total ban on handguns. The political supporters of this group are susally liberal democrats and a few other small independedt groups such as Handgun Control Inc. Their main arguments are questionin gth eoriginal intent of the framers of the constituion adn the way of life in the time it was written, and also the purpose of guns in modern siciety. For thte most part, their claims are mainly emotional and use popular incidences adn the high number of people killed annually from firearms and, gun saftey in households. On the other side of the fence is the pro-gun grouuups who lobby to support law abiding citizens' second amendment rights to keep and bear arms. Their suporters tend to be conservative republicans and pro-gun groups. The most popular of these groups is the NRA(National Rifle Association) which is a strong political group consisting of over three million members. Theses groups tend to use statistics and sases wehre lives have been saved by the use of firearms while strongly stressing gun saftey and training programs. They favor strict interpretation of the Bill of Rights. INthsi paper I am taking a stand against gun control. I feel that law abiding citizens should be entitled to their second ammendment rights to keep and bear arms for the purposes of protection of home, property, and person.
Gun control advocates think that outlawing guns would have stopped the killings from ever happening. While gun rights advocates believe just as strongly that it could have been stopped by one innocent person being armed and fighting back. In order for an issue to even be at hand, both sides must agree that there is a problem with guns and gun control. Both gun control and pro gun advocates do agree that there is a problem. Pro gunners say it is too hard to own a gun and the gun controllers say it is too easy to get a gun.
Parenting.com brought up research on video games to argue about. They mention that a first-person shooter game is more serious than watching violence on T.V. A recent meta-analysis in 2010 of 12 earlier studies found a link between times spent playing video games and violent behavior later in life (Emmons, 2013). They mention the study that was taken place in 2004 from Journal of Adolescence showed that video games are more desensitized than TV. That the children that play violence game are more interactive than watching, their physical activity are different. However, they mention the other studies that failed to link between violent video game exposure and aggression (Emmons, 2013). They brought up a good point that most of the studies had focused on normal kids, the study does not consist of children with e...
One would be hard-pressed to find a household without any video gaming devices. In fact, over eighty percent of American households some sort of gaming device. On top of all that, violent video games have surged in popularity, occupying over 50% of the 30 top video games sold in 2015 (Kain). In light of recent mass shootings, video games are routinely accused as the culprit that influences one to violence. Researchers all over the world have tried to establish a causal relationship between video games and violence. Some researchers have come to the conclusion that video games, specifically violent ones, spark aggression. However, other researchers have come up with the opposite conclusion, that the studies that portray video games as detrimental
When looking at the two opposing arguments I can see their perspectives are founded by
People have always been looking for a reason why horrible things happen. The media is quick to blame video games as the target and cause of many shootings that have occurred, ever since Columbine and Quake. People have been blaming video games for violence for years now, ever since violent video games have been made. News reports blame video games more and more for each shooting, telling the public how this person played video games for x amount of hours a day, and that video games caused him or her to shoot people, and how video games encourage and reward violence. Anti-video game lobbyists have been campaigning to have violence removed from video games, citing resources that they themselves have created as reasons for such, poorly done studies where they confirm that kids are more aggressive through how much hot sauce they put on someone’s fries. While unbiased studies of video games and their links to violence are hard to come by, recent research has shown that video games do not in fact have a casual link to violence, and may even have the opposite effect. Violent video games have nearly no link to violence in teens or adults.
In dissecting the two debates, I have found that applying the theories helps identify the values involved. The application also illuminates the complexity of the issues. Utilization of the theories is not nearly enough to come to a conclusion on either debate. Most of the work in finding an answer to these questions lies in carefully examining every minute detail in each issue, postulating, and mentally following the cause and effects of various conditions. The theories merely give one the tools to make this easier.
Royal Van horn showed in his 1999 article, ?Violence and Video Games,? a large stance on the issue is not one of influencing kids actions....
Video games are one of the most addictive things in the world. Researchers said that more than 1.2 billion people are playing games worldwide whatever genre is. Many people buy it to have fun with friends, other people buy it for themselves, and others just buy it because they don’t have nothing to do at home. What many people concern about is whether or not kids should play video games. In my opinion, I believe that video games can make kids more violent for three main factors.
Advocates and opponents of gun control argue the nature and status of the right to bear arms. Opponents of gun control feel that the right to bear arms is
Overall, the best way to write an effective argument is to use the strategies that both Kelso and Saunders used. One used some better than the other, but neither failed to present their argument. Kelso’s credibility and use of facts overpowered Saunders, whereas Saunders use of opposing viewpoints and ongoing clear stance managed to surpass most of Kelso’s methods. In the end they were both engaging articles, who have points worth reading.
Flanagan explains throughout her article that out of the American youth today, 97% of them play violent video games for at least two hours per week. Also in the article “Imaginary Guns Don’t Kill People, either” by Scott Shackford, he explains that since violent video games have become such a popular activity, it is considered surprising if one hasn’t played one by now. Violent video games show teens that shooting people is acceptable. In “Is video game violence bad?” by Christopher J. Ferguson, he states that the trigger of violent video games causes at least some of aggressive actions that happen throughout the world, including school shootings. For example, in the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, two students carried weapons into the school and proceeded to kill thirteen people. Unsurprisingly, the roots to their actions were speculated to be prior bullying experiences and violent video games (History.com). Also, Ferguson states that violent video games are correlated with mass shootings across the nation. Teens that have been influenced by violence are a dangerous factor to themselves, classmates, friends, and
For the purpose of developing this response argument I would elect to do more research. The rationale is that my knowledge is based on experience and emotion and not grounded in facts and in writing and effective, persuasive and convincing arguments you need to support your assertions and while I have large amounts of passion for my opinion they are just that opinions that are not fact based but rather emotion based and while that emotion will enable me to produce an persuasive argument once the research is complete it is not enough to manufacture an academic
Although violent video games are thought to encourage real world violence, they actually help to prevent it. I am focusing on violent video games and how they affect juveniles because I feel that this issue needs to be looked at in the criminal justice community. It is an unnecessary distraction to blame the actions of a disturbed youth on a form of entertainment that has been used by millions of people without incident. A review article published in The Psychiatric Quarterly found that many studies which claim to indicate an increase in aggression due to video games are, in fact, biased! Once the bias is taken into account, the studies no longer find any correlation between youths who play violent video games and youths who demonstate aggression and violent behavior. (Ferguson, 2014)
While many different case studies have been done all over the world, scientists have yet to prove that there is a direct correlation between violent video games and child aggression. Since the start of this quarter, this has been an issue that I have been doing extensive research on. Despite looking into several scholarly sources, I was surprised to see that many of my findings were pretty consistent with one another. For the mort part, what I found through my research was a bunch of statistics from case studies and the interpretation of those statistics from renowned scientists. In many cases, statistics and studies showed slight indications that violent video games have an effect on c...
