Everyday thousands of people suffer from some type of violence, some may able to live and see the next day and even be able to overcome it and become and advocate to other, however others are not so lucky. No one should ever have to be a victim of any type of abuse, whether it is verbally, emotionally, physically or mentally. Interpersonal violence is a term often used to describe sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking (UNC Charlotte, 2017). No matter what type of violence is being experiences, the victim should always know that it is not their fault, that is help, and safety is available.
Before this subject can be analyzed, there are a few key terms that must be defined. The first term is meta-analytic procedures which are the statistical methods used to analyze and combine results from previous, related literature (Study: Violent Video Game Play). Also, America’s Army is the official video game of the United States Army and is used as a training platform for soldiers (Suellentrop). Now that some terms have been defined it is time to address the first main point.
The allegation that videogames cause violent behavior in children has been present as long as videogames themselves. Some researchers said that the Sandy Hook shooter, Adam Lanza, was one intense gamer. “Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech Shooter was seen by his roomates as odd because he never joined them in video games.”(Beresin) This debate will continue to go on in this country as long as there are horrific crimes that occur. There is much written in the research regarding this issue, and many differing views. The research that is presented in the next few paragraphs supports the theory that it is not the graphic video games that produce aggressive behavior, but other factors in a child’s life that create violent actions.
This could potentially serve as an example to others about what would be considered normative behavior. In a study completed by Fling et al., they found that 4 to 7 year-old children exposed to a violent videogame were more aggressive than the baseline children or the children who were exposed to a non-violent video game. Chambers and Ascione (1987) found that third through eighth graders donated less to a donation box after observing an aggressive videogame as opposed to a prosocial videogame. In a self-report measure, 11 to 14 year old males who played videogames heavily had a lower frustration tolerance. Results by Dominick, Lin, and Lepper, younger children showed more aggression after playing violent videogames, however, some correlational studies have shown that more aggressive children are more drawn to violent videogames. In regards to self-esteem, lower self-esteem may be associated with more frequent videogame play and might increase a sense of mastery, however, is more likely to cause violent behavior. “Surgeon General C. Video games are one of the most addictive things in the world. Researchers said that more than 1.2 billion people are playing games worldwide whatever genre is. Many people buy it to have fun with friends, other people buy it for themselves, and others just buy it because they don’t have nothing to do at home. Contrary to popular belief simply playing first person shooter video games does not have a direct effect on the audience, but other factors like the duration and environment greatly determine the effect. There are many studies which focuses on the positive or negative effects of first person shooters, but do not look into deeper causes or factors. An example would be a study which conducts an experiment on how playing first person shooters increase aggressive mental states by forcing participants to play extensive hours rigorously and analyzing their mental states after. This experiment is skewed due to the fact that it only tested long hours of play and related the result to playing first person shooters in general. Under certain conditions, studies have shown that first person shooters have negative effects. However, there is a generalized misunderstanding as the studies have not accurately shown the cause. I became interested in this research topic due to my own experience of periodic play. I read various articles which contradicted one another. Some would claim that these games would cause children to become incredibly aggressive and should not be a part of a healthy life style. While other article claim positive effects such as enhancement of motor skills or an improvement in spatial skills. I was interested because these articles tended to state completely different things. We are currently in an era of technology and many are concerned about the effects of what these graphically advanced games can do. The problem is many people are misinformed due to selective studies. We will be exploring what are the true causes to these positive and negative effects and what causes this skewed perception of first person shooters.
Some people believe that violent video games can cause behavioral problems. This is not true; it is only their opinion. They may say people that play violent video games start having behavioral problems, and what was that cause? It is only people and it has no effect on them, only their own actions and their mental health issues. The violent video games for computers and consoles’ sales rate went up, but violent crime offenses went down.
Why are we as aggressive and can we develop a way to reduce our ever increasing aggressive behavior? What this research paper is going to cover just might answer that. First we’re going to go over different types of aggression and the differences between them. Next will be the several theories about aggression. This will cover from a biological and genetic point of view to how our diet affects our behaviors in negative ways. We will even look into how our culture has an effect on our aggression levels. Last is what ways can we potentially reduce and manage our angry tendencies as well as control the ever rising aggressive behavior in our society.
Violent video games help the players in their way of thinking. In many researches these games can be used to train soldiers and surgeons because they train the brain to make quick decisions, also they help with managing resources that are limited and deciding the best use of these resources, like in shooting games the player must coordinate brain’s interpretation and reaction with the movement in his hands and fingertips, which requires a great deal of eye-hand coordination.
