Violence and Conflict in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Violence and coflict are central to William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. I will discuss this theme with reference to 2 scenes in the play, Act 1 Scene 1 and Act 3 Scene 1. When Shakespeare wrote this play, in 1957, he was a very popular playwrite, and everyone loved going to his amazing plays. In the play there are a number of main themes, these are, love, feuding families, violence and conflict, life and death, power and fate. These themes are split into 2 catogaries, light & darkness. Darkness is associated with ideas of death, violence and sadness. Ligh is associated with ideas of love, life and hope. The play is about 2 families, the capulets and the montagues, who have an ongoing business feud. Here is a brief description of the main characters in the play. Romeo, he is son of Lord Montague, he is sworn enemy with all capulets, he is very head strong and impulsive. His early love was with Rosaline, but this was just immature love. In the play him and Juliet, (who is a capulet) fall into deep passionate love. Romeo belives that love will conquer all. Benvolio, he is loyal to the montagus and a close friend of Romeo. He doesn't change between the 2 scenes. He is the peacemaker in the play and tries to prevent any kind of violence or conflict in the play. I know this because in act 3 scene 1 he says: 'I pray to thee good Meructio, let's retire, the days hot and the capels are abroad.' By this he means he wants to avoid voilence and conflict with the capulets. Tybalt, his nikname is 'The Prince of Cats'. He is Juliets cousin and nephew of Lady Capulet. He is a very aggresive character and he represents the violence of the fued most vivdly. He is completly oppisite to benvoilio as he tries to create voilence and conflict in the play. He only shows 1 emotion which is anger and therefore is a 2
In the Shakespearean play, Romeo & Juliet, aggression is represented in different ways by the different characters in the play. Tybalt, Romeo, Benvolio, and the others all have their own way of dealing with hate and anger. Some do nothing but hate while others can’t stand to see even the smallest of quarrels take place.
Conflict has many different meanings for both physical and verbal abuse. Conflict could be a viscous feud or a full on physical fight. These days in television soap dramas we intend to see more verbal conflict than physical violence. But over the last couple of years new television programmes have been released which contains a lot of action-packed fighting and physical conflict of some kind. Some programmes include physical and verbal conflict including, “Eastenders”, “The Bill” and other programmes similar to these. The releasing of films such as, “Indiana Jones”, and “Rambo” catches the audience’s attention by involving action-packed, exciting features such as heavy arguments or thrilling battles. Some films are made to include action and excitement but when audiences watch it they cannot help feeling sorry for the victim or just generally sad for the people having the fight. In the same way Romeo and Juliet presents conflict more intense than most soap dramas. When the play was first performed in “The Theatre”, in Shoreditch in the mid 1590’s, the Elizabethan audience was shocked at how Juliet disobeyed her father and also how Romeo and Juliet disobeyed their families. Sympathy must be felt for the audience because they would have never known the idea of a son or daughter disobeying their father. The law at that time stated that the daughter was the property of her father until the daughter got married then her husband “owned” her as property. From this sympathy must be felt for Juliet because she is a victim of arranged marriages. When the play was first performed it got massive great responses which then lead to the play being transferred to The Globe theatre at the start of the 1600’s. Props and different costumes helped ...
Sometimes when people are amongst conflict, they act impetuously in certain situations. In the play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, careless actions take place by the characters when they are put into stressful and difficult situations. They are not thought through and result in consequences for more than just themselves. In Romeo and Juliet when in the midst of conflict, characters tend to think and act impulsively and not think of the reaction to their actions. They do not think of the consequences their actions may bring, or how they may affect others in the future.
Shakespeare's Use of Violence and Conflict in Romeo and Juliet in Act 3 Scene 1
were not of a very high standard. In Act 1 we see him stealing a ball
Romeo And Juliet, alongside Hamlet, is probably Shakespeare’s most performed play and has also been adapted in many forms. In Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet killed themselves due to the conflicts between the Capulets and the Montagues, Romeo and Juliet’s families. Regardless of the differences in reactions regarding the conflict between the two families, both Romeo and Tybalt are characters that act before they think, causing an unfortunate effect on the tragedy of the play.

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. It tells the tale of two lovers from rival households and the tragic journey that leads to their destruction. The play shows all the events over the course of four days in Romeo and Juliet’s home town of Verona. Monday through Thursday is all we have to see of the Montague and Capulet families to acknowledge their hatred for each other. The play shows the struggle of Romeo and Juliet in their efforts to stop the hatred between their families and live happily ever after. But despite their efforts, they end up digging their own graves, showing how different actions have different consequences.
‘Romeo and Juliet’ by William Shakespeare incorporates the theme of conflict through many different characters and situations. The definition of conflict is “a fight, battle, or struggle; especially a prolonged struggle; strife” The play mainly focuses on the tragic lives of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet; the two characters belong to the Montague and Capulet households respectively, which have held ongoing grudges against each other for years. The play ends with both main characters committing suicide, to be together in heaven. As with many of Shakespeare’s works, the theme of conflict is a strong one. For a start, there is the ongoing conflict between the two families; the Montagues and the Capulets. The audience is unsure how this grudge started; this reflects how tedious some ongoing grudges can be. This is a vital conflict to keep the structure of the story, as without this conflict Romeo and Juliet would not have encountered the problems they had with their marriage. However, there are different ways of putting this grudge across - through dialogue, such as Mercutio’s intell...
Without Act 2 Scene 2 the whole play makes no sense. This is the scene
Scene 2 act 2 is one of the most important scenes in the play. This is
scene iv is so dramatic and violent, he casts suspicion onto himself, instead of gaining
...d that he's been insulted for being stupid. Hamlet uses his intelligence and morbid sense of humor to portray the show how sad the play really is.
According to Marvin Speavock and other critics on Shakespeare, the play presents a “two-peak action”, meaning that the play is divided in two different parts: the first three acts on one side, and the last two on the others. This division makes sense, specially when considering how the tragedy unfolds.
