Violence and Conflict in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Violence and coflict are central to William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. I will discuss this theme with reference to 2 scenes in the play, Act 1 Scene 1 and Act 3 Scene 1. When Shakespeare wrote this play, in 1957, he was a very popular playwrite, and everyone loved going to his amazing plays. In the play there are a number of main themes, these are, love, feuding families, violence and conflict, life and death, power and fate. These themes are split into 2 catogaries, light & darkness. Darkness is associated with ideas of death, violence and sadness. Ligh is associated with ideas of love, life and hope. The play is about 2 families, the capulets and the montagues, who have an ongoing business feud. Here is a brief description of the main characters in the play. Romeo, he is son of Lord Montague, he is sworn enemy with all capulets, he is very head strong and impulsive. His early love was with Rosaline, but this was just immature love. In the play him and Juliet, (who is a capulet) fall into deep passionate love. Romeo belives that love will conquer all. Benvolio, he is loyal to the montagus and a close friend of Romeo. He doesn't change between the 2 scenes. He is the peacemaker in the play and tries to prevent any kind of violence or conflict in the play. I know this because in act 3 scene 1 he says: 'I pray to thee good Meructio, let's retire, the days hot and the capels are abroad.' By this he means he wants to avoid voilence and conflict with the capulets. Tybalt, his nikname is 'The Prince of Cats'. He is Juliets cousin and nephew of Lady Capulet. He is a very aggresive character and he represents the violence of the fued most vivdly. He is completly oppisite to benvoilio as he tries to create voilence and conflict in the play.
