Violence and Love
In the movie Freedom Writers, what impressed me most is that those nonwhite kids seems to have inherent hatred towards other color people and what they choose to do to “deal” with those problems caused by racial discrimination, is violence----fight with fists or even guns. But is it right for those nonwhite kids to use violent ways to fight for respects or deal with bias problems? In my posture, it’s definitely not! On one hand, those immature kids lack of objective judgment, so their ideas tend to be too much radical. On the other hand, it 's not an impactful way to achieve what they want. And in some way, barbarity is the quickest way to stop being belittled by others. In my opinion, it’s wrong. First of all, if you want to gain equality rights and respect, violence is not a convincible method because that would contradict your rights to freedom. May as well look back to American civil rights movement, what the leader Martin Luther King claimed most was nonviolence. “We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.”6 Violence is rude; violence is irrational; violence is against humanity. It would let you in a passive position for lacking of reason then you can’t get any respect. Furthermore, what the violence brings to us is always negative. There are some events in America caused by racial discrimination. The most mentionable one is 1992 Los Angeles riots. It is exactly the event told in the beginning of Freedom Writers and is also the most horrible violent event in America. It might was a catalyst for those nonwhite kids to hate other ethnic people, for protest event just happened right around them, in Long Beach. Widespread riots led to really vicious damage. In this event, “In total, 53 people were killed during the riots and over 2,000 people were injured.”7 About 8-10 hundred billion dollars lost in property and over 1000 houses were burnt. While non-violent protests were politically correct, many participants often put their lives, families and property in danger. Particularly in the south, the KKK and other white supremacist groups gained a reputation for church bombings, lynching and other violent acts against minorities. Despite pacifist idealism in a public protest, it didn’t mean black were willing to let their homes, churches and loved ones go undefended. During the period of 20 years between 1950 and 1970, black Americans were able to improve their level of civil rights. Therefore, it is logical to say that they were at least partly successful in achieving their civil rights. This was accomplished through a variety of ways, two commonly used techniques being legal strategies and non-violent direct action. However, because they were unable to attain complete equality, there must have been factors that worked against the civil rights movement. One of these factors was the use of violence as a means of protest.
Until the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his life’s work was dedicated to the nonviolent actions of blacks to gain the freedoms they were promised in the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 by Abraham Lincoln. He believed that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” (King, 1963). These injustices had become so burdensome to blacks that they were “plunged into an abyss of despair” (King, 1963). The nonviolent actions of the sit-ins, boycotts, and marches were so the “individual could rise from the bondage of myths and half-truths…to help men rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism” and ultimately lead to “inevitably opening the door to negotiation” (King, 1963). Not only was King’s approach effective with the older black generation, it was also successful with white people. They did not feel threatened when approached by King. White people gained a sense of empathy towards the plight of black freedom as King’s promise of nonviolence did not threaten their livelihood. Malcolm X viewed the world similarly to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., however; his beliefs to changing the status quo were slightly different from his political counterpart. Malcolm X realized that “anger could blind human vision” (X, 1965). In realizing this, X knew that in order to achieve racial freedom blacks had to “forget hypocritical politics and propaganda” (X, 1965). While Malcolm X was more so an advocate for violent forces against white people than King, X merely used force when it became necessary for defense. According to X, “I don’t go for non-violence if it also means a delayed solution. I am for violence if non-violence means we continue postponing a solution to American black man’s problem” (X, 1965). During the 1980s and 1900s, domestic violence was one of the most unreported crimes that involve females and males getting hurt and dying. Kicking, choking, killing, and saying brutal or despise words that could hurt the victims physically or emotionally are considered domestic violence. In fact, many victims are afraid to seek for help. According to “The Domestic Violence Resource Center (DVRC), women account for approximately 85 percent of all intimate partner violence, with women aged 20-24 at greater risk” (Batten, par.16). Most pregnant women are at risk as well. “But underlying approach is still one that assumes the perpetrators are men and the victims are woman” (Haugen, par. 1). Moreover, both males and females believe that domestic violence is a solution to their issues.
Erin Gruwell began her teaching career at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California where the school is integrated but it’s not working. Mrs. Gruwell is teaching a class fill with at-risk teenagers that are not interested in learning. But she makes not give up, instead she inspires her students to take an interest in their education and planning for their future as she assigned materials that can relate to their lives. This film has observed many social issues and connected to one of the sociological perspective, conflict theory. Freedom Writers have been constructed in a way that it promotes an idea of how the community where the student lives, represented as a racially acceptable society. I connected the article about the rise in Hip Hop in the Bronx and its relation to curbing violence to two different ideas found in the articles we read, the first being black reurbanism from Robert Fishman’s, “The fifth migration” and the second being the concept that the city of Kinshasa while being very poor, was a thriving center of arts and popular music from the Kinshasa article, I could not find the author of this article as there was many different names there. There are many similarities in these articles, one being that in the Bronx, despite the challenges it faces, it has overcome much of its violence with the use of arts such as they did in Kinshasa, all on their own. Instead of using violence, they have resorted to a much more peaceful and creative way to settle their differences, such as dance, graffiti, and fashion. Another connection is that even though the Bronx is the home of hip hop and so many ideals from mainstream pop culture originated there and should be a city of great wealth, the city is still suffering. During the 60’s and 70’s, people have thrashed out with their words and each other. This caused some awareness in schools due to the offensiveness of the matter. During the 80’s schools began on focusing on preventing this kind of speech on their campuses. Since then, students have become more and more sensitive in a negative way. The authors used an example of a kid shouting “Shut up, you water buffalo” at an Israeli born student. That incident made national news, just for calling another kid a “water buffalo.” Another example is when a university found a student guilty of racial harassment for reading a book honoring student opposition to the Ku Klux Clan. The picture on the cover of the book offended one of the student’s co-workers. Just because the student was reading a book, minding his own business, the student was punished from the university. Never said anything or hurt anyone physically, and his education was ruined by someone taking offense to a book he was reading. As aggression in the media increases, studies examining its effects on human behavior do as well. It is widely accepted that physical aggression is characterized by physical violence. On the other hand, social aggression is characterized by both verbal and nonverbal actions typically ranging from gossip and rumors to ignoring peers. In this paper, I’m going to apply the social learning theory, biological theory and individual psychopathology theory to domestic violence. Social learning theory says domestic violence is educated performance from close relatives which is modeled, embraced, and benefited. According to the second theory, “domestic violence is biological which can be determined by inheritances and alterations in the brain growth due to trauma (Wolfe).” In the third theory, individual psychopathology, domestic violence is a learned structure based off early childhood experiences. This theory is found to be more probable than the biological theory. Domestic abuse transpires when a person in a relationship or marriage attempts to dominate and control their significant other unwillingly. When the abuse contains physical violence it is called domestic violence. Beginning at the early stages of life domestic violence can transpire in relationship due to observational learning, trauma and physical abuse; these attributes explain three theories: the social learning theory, the biological theory, and the individual psychopathology theory.
Introduction to Intimate Partner Violence Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a tremendously serious social and public health problem. Progression of intimate partner violence can lead to morbidity or mortality and affect various types of relationships. An intimate partner is one that is described by frequent contact, identifying as a couple, emotional bonding, and regular physical and/or sexual contact. A few examples of intimate partners include dating partners, spouses, girlfriends or boyfriends, and sexual partners. Violence within these intimate relationships can be psychological, physical, or sexual and present in heterosexual relationships, homosexual relationships, and to disabled partners in relationships.
Domestic violence happens to millions of homes every year. Consequently, the public “saying no” to domestic violence, victims, now less self-conscious to have been victimized, are able to talk about their wrongs, and can summon the help to prosecute their perpetrators, both in criminal and civil stadia.
Michael Sanders, a Professor at Harvard University, gave a lecture titled “Justice: What’s The Right Thing To Do? The Moral Side of Murder” to nearly a thousand student’s in attendance. The lecture touched on two contrasting philosophies of morality. The first philosophy of morality discussed in the lecture is called Consequentialism. This is the view that "the consequences of one 's conduct are the ultimate basis for any judgment about the rightness or wrongness of that conduct.” (Consequentialism) This type of moral thinking became known as utilitarianism and was formulated by Jeremy Bentham who basically argues that the most moral thing to do is to bring the greatest amount of happiness to the greatest number of people possible.
Behaviorism is a classic psychology approach to understanding an organism's social and cognitive skills. This field of psychology focuses on observable behavior including measuring types of communication and natural mannerisms. It is important to understand how individuals present and express themselves in their natural environments in order to recognize and further advance knowledge about psychological disorders. Love, the single feeling that generates the funny sentiments in our stomach, giving us the warm pleasures in our body, causing us to feel joy, and to believe every aspect in our life will constantly go right. In addition, causing us to receive an accelerating, appealing feeling that makes us want to rejoice. Love can be a speeding of your heart, but it can also be nerve-racking. Our hearts rapidly begin to pump, making a rapid beat— “ba-boom, ba-boom, ba-boom”. Attempting to describe love is a rigorous task, but it is possible. However, the easiest detail to describe and understand about love is the concept of what it is about. Many people may obtain different views and definitions regarding love, but their ideas tend to unite at some point.
