I thank you for inviting me to speak to you today on a matter that concerns all of us, violence against women. It is one of the most pervasive violations of human rights in the world and sadly, one of the least prosecuted crimes.

Did you know that on average, one woman is killed every week by a current or former partner in Australia? And one in four young Australians is exposed to domestic violence. In fact, one in three Australian women has experienced physical violence since the age of 15 at the hands of a man. This year alone more than 60 women have been killed by a partner or family member.

I am certain that the women and men in the room here today share my belief, that violence against women is not acceptable in our workplace, our homes and in our society.

I’ve known for most of my life that violence against women has been an issue in our country, but since becoming a White Ribbon ambassador, I have learned just how big and real an issue it is. The White Ribbon movement has provided me, as a male and as a leader within the Defence Force, with a greater understanding of the issues that women have to deal with in relation to violence.

As Commandant of the Australian Defence Force Academy, I have been involved in a journey to educating young men and women, the future leaders of the Australian Defence Force; about the impact violence against women has on our society, on our country. There are approximately 200 young women at the Australian Defence Force Academy, and as Commandant, their safety and security is my priority. 200 sisters, 200 daughters, 200 Australian women. They live and work with young men and the best way for me to ensure their safety, is to educate the boys – educate and encourage them to stand up, and take action against violence against women, in any form.

Violence is about power, it is not inherent to manhood, the woman is not at fault. The result is out of anger, out of greed, out of a lust for power. These men who disrespect women do so because they feel superior to women, or feel that they have a right to. It is up to us to change these attitudes. Education and safe intervention is the key.
