Violence in school has become a significant public health risk. Not only does it have a negative effect on individual students, but on the school as a whole. This can cause long-term issues for both the victim and the perpetrator. The article, Violence in the School Setting: A School Nurse Perspective, written by King, K., discusses the meaning of violence, identifies that violence comes in many forms, and the importance of the school nursing role.

Some are violent acts such as bullying, pushing, and shoving. Other behaviors include gang violence and assault, which can lead to serious injury or even death. It is important to remember that not all injuries are visible. Witnessing violence can lead to a wide variety of negative behaviors including alcohol and drug abuse or suicide. Depression, anxiety, and other psychological problems can result from school violence too.
Violence does not have to happen in school to effect the school population. For example, witnessed violence by a child in the home can result in poor school performance or repeating the learned behavior. All violent behaviors must be taken seriously. Educating the student population on how to over come this issue is essential to be able to work toward prevention.
Numerous factors can increase the risk of a child engaging in violence at school, but the occurrence of these factors does not always mean that the child will become an offender. Risk factors for school and youth violence include: previous history of violence, drug, alcohol, or tobacco use, poor family dynamics, low grades in school, or poverty. This includes programs related to violence intervention and prevention. A student’s health is associated to his or her ability to learn. The school nurse supports student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting.
The school nurse addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and supports their learning. The school nurse is an essential part of the school team that assists with change to attain health and corresponds with school staff, parents and the community to keep students safe at school and healthy to learn. School nurses assist with normal development and positive student response to interventions; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; and actively work with others to build student and family learning (King, K.).
