... middle of paper ... ... Electricity is an interesting subject. There is so much you can learn from it, like how our lights turn on or how we make cell phones. This is all a mystery until we finally get a little bit of information in our brains. I've just read two articles, "Energy Story" and "Conducting solutions". I also watched a video called Hands-on Science with Squishy circuits. I learned so much valuable information from these resources.
In his translation of The Saga of the Volsungs: the Norse Epic of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer, Jesse L. Byock compiles many versions of this famous Norse epic and creates a very important scholarly work. Of special importance is the introduction, which provides a central working background to base readings upon. There are several themes echoed throughout the translation that reflect accurately on this portion of history. Byock does a superb job of illustrating these important aspects in his work. While the tale Byock tells is a fairy-tale handed down by generations of families, within the reader can find tell-tale signs of important aspects of Norse culture. For instance, important aspects of family life and the role of men and women surface. Likewise, the importance of wealth and material possessions on the power and prestige of a king is also evident.

Just as with Erec, the origin of Enide is widely debated. There are two basic theories of how she came into existence in medieval literature. One theory is that it was Chretien De Troyes who created the characters Erec and Enide, and it was the Welsh that drew off of Chretienís work in order to fabricate their own tales of the two (Owen xvi). This theory may have evolved due to the fact that "Wales contributed very little, or even nothing of importance to the Arthurian legend as it developed in France, and Germany and then in England" (Jones and Jones xxv). Chretien was therefore given the credit because of his extensive writings on the Arthurian legends, and the fact that he was French. However, a more widely accepted theory is that the story of Erec and Enide was derived from the Welsh (Jones xxv). Evidence supporting this theory is that of the "comparative folktale, of proper names and linguistics, and what may be reasonably if tentatively deduced from the methods of literary composition in the Middle Ages" (Jones xxvi). Due to the fact that no one is sure who wrote about Enide first, the task of finding where she first appears in literature is daunting undertaking. Nevertheless, we are able to fill in some of the gaps as to where Enide is mentioned in some texts. Circa 1170, Chretien De Troyes wrote Erec and Enide that can be found in Chretienís collection entitled Arthurian Romances. Erec also appears in The Mabinogion, another collection of Arthurian tales. In this book, Erec, also called Geraint, appears in the tale Geraint son of Erbin. Lord Alfred Tennyson includes Enide in two out of the four Idylls of the King. Both "The Marriage of Geraint" and "Geraint and Enide" were written between 1809 and 1892. Enide also appears in some lesser-known, more modern works. These include two plays: Ernest Rhyís Enid: A Lyric Play (1918) and Donald R. Raweís Geraint: last of the Arthurians (1972), and Marion Lee Reynoldsí poem Geraint of Devon (Lupack).

The competition starts to increase, with more than 30 to 40 companies, however Bergqvist’ company still partly remained its own position as it the first one in the region. As a member of local tourism industry, Bergqvist also entered restaurant business. He needed to have full time staff. However, he soon realized that his tourist business was just seasonal. It could make money in the summer; however, in winter no one would like to travel in cold and dark. The local tourist office even closed in the winter; therefore, this required Bergqvist having new ideas to help his company survive in the winter season. Bergqvist had thought about other winter destination as Alaska. They had many Japanese tourists. Bergqvist contacted with Scandinavian Tourist Board – a Swedish tourist company in Japan. He wanted to tourists from Japan as well as other countries to Sweden in the winter. After a trip to Hokkaido when they had the big ice festival, Bergqvist invited ice sculpture artist- Aoki to Sweden to create ice sculptures in
Heaney’s translation made a greater use of alliterations. Raffel did not take advantages of these alliterations; therefore, did not have the same poetic impact. Heaney uses a kenning to describe the Danes whereas a simple yet modern approach is enough to satisfy Raffel. Heaney refers to the Danish peoples as a traditional Anglo-Saxon writer would, as “Ring-Danes”. Through the use of Heaney’s kennings, the reader is better able to understand how Beowulf was originally composed.

The Swedish Criminal Justice System is one by comparison to other countries, a well oiled machine. Before recognizing the aspects of the criminal justice system of Sweden, there is some history that has to be brought into the light. Sweden and Finland are very similar in comparison, whether that is the close geographical position of both countries or the similarities of cultures or maybe due to the fact that they are both apart of the Nordic Welfare State. Sweden and Finland both have the world’s oldest homicide statistics, which started in the mid-1700’s. Sweden, like many other countries has been through multiple political-social changes and developments throughout the last few centuries. They did not participate in either of the World Wars,

In the middle of the 19th century when Norway, needed to have a new written language of it’s own, after being under Danish rule. The process of getting this new Norwegian written language, was not straightforward, as not one way of doing was agreed on. There were two rivaling ways of getting the new Norwegian written language. One was to adopt a newly created language based upon the older dialects, that reassembled old norse the most. This approach was founded by Ivar Aasen. The other approach was to use the dano-norwegian that a lot of people already used, and standardize it a gradually changing the danish words into Norwegian. This idea was founded by Knud knudsen, and is what lead to bokmål. These two different approaches battled in what later was known as the language conflict of Norway.
...ons about society and about the foundations of legitimate power (Morales, Yves). In the eyes of the Scandinavians, they had invented skiing as a modern sport and led a policy that was a mixture of both conservatism and nationalism, which turned out to come off as isolationism. The will to quest and conquer the polar extremes, as well as the inland glaciers of Greenland, has been a part of Scandinavian polar history, to such a degree that it can be termed a national characteristic (Goksøyr, Matti). In a recent book by Tor Bomann-Larsen, he cites Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson’s opening Evige sne as a representative of how Scandinavian national culture, as the country was developing into a nation state, was one in which snow, and therefore skiing, became a catalyzing factor that gave the Scandinavian nations their uniqueness, their purity, and their right to be independent.
