Should the U.S. have been involved in the Vietnam War? Well, first how did we get involved into the Vietnam War and why? The U.S. entered the war to prevent the spread of Communism. America first got involved in the 50s by providing relatively small amounts of economic and military aid to the French, who were involved in fighting in Vietnam before we were. When the French failed and a Communist government in North Vietnam arose, Eisenhower sent "advisors" to South Vietnam to train their military to resist the North's (Keene). Also the doctrine, which Harry Truman created, called “containment” led directly to the Vietnam War (Document 2). Then in 1964, the Gulf of Tonkin incident occurred in waters adjacent to North Vietnam, where an American …show more content…

The war in Vietnam bothered many people back at home and drove people crazy. Also, television showed horrified pictures of combat into families’ homes every night and innocent people catching on fire. Then there were atrocious stories such as the My Lai massacre, in which many women and children were killed. This massacre sparked even more when people learned that the government was trying to cover it up for more than twenty months. At that time, MLK continued to be the most admired leader of civil rights movement. As far as civil rights were concerned, he believed that the Negroes were being overlooked and that the nation was focusing more on foreign issues than domestic. Inspired by the Free Speech Movement, minority of students joined the New Left. The students that joined showed the hatred towards racism and Vietnam War. In the wake of the New Left, appeared phenomena that people called counterculture. Counterculture reflected new attitudes towards sex, drugs, and ways of life. Then the other major movement during the time was the National Organization for Women, which was founded in 1966. Its purpose was to establish equal rights in partnership with men. Then later on there was a song (I Feel Like I’m Fixin To Die) that basically stated that the American youths were being sent to Vietnam to die.
