Although video games in North America have recovered from the North American video game crash of 1983, a massive recession of the video game industry that ended in 1985, some don’t know very much about video games. An important thing to know about video games is the amount of genres available. When purchasing a video game you have seven genres to choose from; action, action-adventure, adventure, role-playing, simulation, strategy, and sports. If you want to test your reflexes, action games may be the genre for you. An action game is a genre that focuses on physical challenges like hand-eye coordination and reaction-time. It has a massive amount of sub-genres such as shooter games, fighting games, and platform games, which are commonly believed to be the most important action games. In an action game, players normally control a character. The player must guide his character through a level, while collecting important objects, avoiding obstacles, and battling enemies with multiple forms of attack. Some sports games use the names and characteristics of real players and their respective teams, and are updated yearly to reflect changes that occur in the real-world. Players have come to expect sports games to have a realistic graphical scale, and accurate athletic characteristics. When thinking about video games, you have to take in mind that there are many different genres available to you. In pages 20-24 of Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World, I agree that there are many different video games. For me, I am a fan of single-player games with story modes because I can play by myself and go at a pace that suits me. However, I enjoy playing online multiplayer when I have friends I can play with because it is fun interacting with friends and doing stuff together. I play on a console or my computer, but I have played on my phone and a hand-held device. I have not played a board game or card game in a while, but I would play it if the opportunity presents itself. The video games genres I play are sports, action, and adventure.
