Diablo, Tomb Raider, Plants vs. Zombies, and Halo what do all of these games have in common? They are some of the most popular games or gaming franchises to show up over the last 20-25 years. Gaming is used as a way to lower stress levels by taking humans away from the brutality of reality. The future is changing in ways most can’t see, such as the use video games as a way to solve the world’s most urgent goals. Video games are also being used to show what will happen in the loss of resources used in everyday life. One of the more important things that video games are working on is to get players once again more involved in reality, rather than keeping players locked in their homes immersed in a fictional universe. Gaming, such a controversial topic, something the older generation thinks to be a waste of time, while the younger generation sees the effect that gaming can and will have on the future such as effects on vision, lengths of a latent period, abilities to rotate something that is 2-D and see it as 3-D. In the book Reality is Broken, Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World, it is written, “You’ll discover [games] designed to help ordinary people achieve the world’s most urgent goals” (McGonigal, 15). The games push the gamers into situations that they normally wouldn’t have had to be put in. The loss of oil, and climate change are smaller more culture changing effects that small games like WWO (World without Oil) are helping to stop or fix. Now there are games that are being developed or are starting to come out to help get players out of their homes, and more active.
