The Elks’ compassion and loyalty to military members and veterans during World War I led them to donate $2 million dollars to assist U.S. soldiers, organize and equip the first two base hospitals in France and build The Elks Reconstruction Hospital, which was given to the United States’ War Department in 1918. After the conclusion of the war, the Elks gave disabled veterans over 40,000 rehabilitation, vocational and educational loans in gratitude for their service. This act of goodwill was the catalyst of the creation of the government’s GI Bill due to its effectiveness and proven necessity.
Though the needs of soldiers and veterans has changed since World War I, the Elks’ dedication to them has remained resolute. The Elks National Veterans Service Commission was founded 70 years ago to formalize the service and honoring of our nation’s military and veterans. The commission oversees the many national veteran programs and supports the numerous local lodges’ efforts of giving generously of their time, talent and resources to assist veterans and military members. In fiscal year April 2015 – March 2016, the Elks devoted 1.3 million volunteer hours and $2.5 million dollars towards military and veterans

Veterans’ Affairs Voluntary Service
The Elks are a long time partner of VA hospitals and facilities across the nation. More than 145 Elks serve as Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service Representatives, assisting hospitalized and recovering veterans by providing consistent comfort, support and friendship to the 6 million veterans who visit VA facilities each year. In 2015-16, more than 14,000 Elks have volunteered serving nearly 300,000 veterans.
Veterans Leather Program
Ever resourceful, the Elks collected over 17,000 animal hides transforming it into leather to be used for the needs of veterans. In 2015-16, 2,843 disabled veterans received free wheelchair gloves, and 26, 928 square feet of leather was also used to provide craft kits for veterans in
By 1936 there were an estimated 35,000 unemployed veterans in depression-era Canada. In response to the need implied by this statistic, the government established the Veterans’ Assistance Commission, which sought to equip unemployed veterans for jobs and provide at least some of them with work.
Strengths – In terms of its strengths, WWP is a fast-growing nonprofit that is able to reach its financial objectives to fund its many programs. This is evidenced by the fact that the WWP reported that it has a “total revenue of $342 million, which is more than the revenue WWP generated 5 years ago at $74 million” (Clolery & Hrywna, 2016, para.13). WWP’S membership numbers continue to increase, and as of July 2016 WWP has 91,218 alumni and 19,766 family members (Who We Serve, n.d.). The numbers have increased steadily over the past few years and are projected to increase in the years to come. Currently, the WWP has many corporate sponsors, which include the NFL, Amazon, and Bank of America. (Current Corporate Sponsors, n.d.). This shows that the WWP is an organization that helps veterans and is supported by reputable and widely known companies, which demonstrates that the WWP is good at fundraising.
Prior to war and the passage of the GI Bill the average American could only dream about college and owning a home. Designed to be used for college, technical or vocational courses, apprenticeship/on-the-job ship/on-the-job training, certificate programs, flight training and correspondence courses and home loan guaranty, the GI Bill has been credited with establishing the foundation of today’s middle class. By 1984, when the GI Bill was revamped, 7.8 World War II Veterans had participated in education or vocational training programs. The updated program became known as the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB), after former Mississippi Congressman Gillespie V. “Sonny” Montgomery. His goal was to continue education programs and the VA home loan guaranty for the latest as well as, future generations ...
Veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder need to receive better care, because post traumatic stress disorder is curable, damages relationships, and veterans made many dramatic sacrifices. The health care for veterans needs to be more easily accessible.
As men and women serve this country we often forget the importance of what they did and how we give back to them for what they have experienced. Through student surveys that have been gathered, it has been proven in the course of knowledge that 80% of all thirty students surveyed that say they know of someone who is or was a veteran and only 57% of those Veterans receive help. Richelle E. Goodrich stated, “Have you ever stopped to ponder the amount of blood spilt, the volume of tears shed, the degree of pain and anguish endured, the number of noble men a...

I volunteer in a lot of activities, especially considering I am a girl scout. We organize many drives for things such as food and sports equipment and everybody enjoys themselves while doing it. I volunteer at church sometimes, contributing my time to making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the hungry, instead of doing pointless things at home. Being a good person isn’t just about being kind to everyone around you. You have to put those great things about you into use and help your community. That’s what makes you a great choice for the National Junior Honor Society.

They are encouraging the act but they are not participating in it itself. (Source 17 Hines Prize Winning Cartoon in the 1918 Trench and camp Cartoon contest p.155). This all comes back to the thought of making money. What other ways to help your troops than to donate or give money to them?

The United States has thousands of veterans and many of them suffer from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The care for veterans must be improved. Veteran care needs to be improved because they are not getting the proper care that they need, not receiving credit for their service, and they were willing to pay the ultimate price for freedom, yet people will not pay the price of time to help them.
Armed with numerous studies, and intensive public hearings, Congress mandated far-reaching changes in DOD organization and responsibilities in the Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense Reorganization Act of 1986. This landmark legislation significantly expanded the authority and responsibility of the chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. Included in this expanded authority and responsibility was the requirement for the chairman to develop a doctrine for the joint employment of armed forces. As operations Urgent Fury, Just Cause, and Desert Storm have vividly demonstrated, the realities of armed conflict in today's world make the integration of individual service capabilities a matter of success or failure, life or death. Furthermore, the operation Desert One demonstrated the need for a strengthened Joint Warfare Doctrine and the consequent change in Joint Warfare Employment. It is plain to see the benefits of having the greatest navy integrated with the world's greatest army and air force. However, even in the wake of a relatively successful joint operation in the Middle East (Desert Storm), certain weaknesses are evident in the current joint employment tactics and/or capabilities. By analyzing past operations such as Urgent Fury and Desert Storm, we are able to see sufficient evidence that the Joint Warfare Concept can be disastrous in one instance and virtually flawless in another.
The VA (Veterans Affair) Health Care System is one of the largest, most advanced health care networks in the U.S. The VA Health Care System is the provider for veterans, retirees and their dependents and manages all their health care needs. VA Health Care is actually part of the Department of Veterans Affairs. There is also the VA Benefits Administration which has to do with compensation and pensions. Then the other part of the VA is the National Cemetery Administration, which is in charge of the cemeteries and providing burial and memorial benefits.
