Veganism Essay

There's little doubt that the Earth is in a crisis. The human population is hungrily burning through its resources while simultaneously destroying its ecological balance. While catastrophe seems imminent, there is one small change each person could make in life that would lessen the devestating impact and minimalize our ecological footprint: Veganism. Regardless of a vegan's reasons for going vegan, and there are several, there's little doubt of that veganism, or minimally a mostly plant-based diet, can offer a reduction in the contribution of harming the ecological balance of the earth. Dr. David Brubaker of the Center for Livable Future at Johns Hopkins University said, “The way that we breed animals for food is a threat to the planet. It pollutes our environment while consuming huge amounts of water, grain, petroleum, pesticides and drugs. The results are disastrous.” Livestock agriculture, that is any farming situation that raises animals for product, is undeniably responsible for the misuse of earth's rescources. From soil to air and everything in between, each aspect of the environment is affected by its presence. Take, for example, that livestock agriculture and the plant-based agriculture specifically used for feeding that livestock utilizes 30 percent of land on Earth. With crops in high demand to feed the many animals that are slaughtered or otherwise used by humans, it's been found that the soil has lost a great deal of its nutritional value and has eroded to the point that, in the United States, nearly 33 percent of topsoil is diminished. And what about fresh water? When one considers the number of plants and animals in agriculture, it's found that 70 percent of fresh water is used to sustain them. The main difference?... ... middle of paper ... ...ough people caught on, it may not save the earth but it may sustain it, at least for a little while: The most important thing one can do is eat locally. Shop at the Farmer's Market or join a community supported agriculture (CSA). Grow food in a garden and trade with friends in nice weather. Take up some real Pintrest Do-It-Yourself and learn how to make jam, freeze food and more. Eat as little meat as possible and opt for going to local farmer or restaurant that specializes in locally grown food when desired. Avoid eating eggs and milk in general (unless purchased from a small-scale farmer), but one shouldn't fret over those traces of milk or eggs found in most prepared foods. One should be mindful, not wasteful, and attempt to purchase and eat as little as necessary. Cutting back unnecessary food intake overall will help reduce an ecological footprint in itself.
