Frederick Douglas stated, “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free”. As a future educator I couldn’t agree more with this statement. Using technology to assist with literacy within the classroom will help prepare the students for the “real world”. Use of technology has changed the way teachers teach because they now have more effective ways of reaching different types of learners. Especially when trying to reach students with specific disabilities that would otherwise not be able to participate without the use of some type of assistive technology. The future of technology used within the classrooms can be revolutionary and endless. In today’s world technology has become a key learning tool for adolescents with literacy issues and has shown a positive increase in both literacy and learning.
Our conceptions of what literacy is have changed drastically over the years. It has evolved from a stone tablets, to a printed book, to today’s modern computer. Literacy is broken down into several parts: one third is reading and writing, and two thirds is through listening/speaking and viewing visual representation. With this knowledge you will see that two thirds of literacy learning can be covered with using various forms of technology. Research has shown “… positive results in using technology to assist students with achievement in many academic areas, including literacy” (Clary, 2013, p. 52). Teachers are able to choose from a variety of technological platforms to enhance learning within their lessons. As seen throughout this paper, there are a variety of technological tools available to reach all students, including those with specific disabilities. By implementing the use of technology to assist with increasing and meeting students’ literacy needs you are ensuring progression in both literacy and learning. Educators can improve the way they implement technology to increase literacy and learning within their classrooms through the use of professional learning communities and other online resources. Technology can open up doors to more learning within the classroom that might not otherwise be achieved. Proper use can ensure students have the key literacy and learning tools to go further and thus will able to achieve more within today’s society and “…be forever free” (Frederick Douglas).
The article discusses a study done in 2013. The study consisted of five different schools in Chile where teachers were using Khan Academy. Four of the five schools were chosen from a non-profit network of schools that provide education to students from low-income families. These families pay approximately $25 a month to send their children to this school. The fifth school was a public school in Chile. The researchers wanted to know how Khan Academy was blending with classroom practices of teachers. So, the researchers interviewed teachers on their use of Khan Academy and their reflections on the website. The study was based on a theory by Vygotsky who believed that tools play an important role in the process of learning and interacting with others. In the study, Khan Academy was the tool being integrated with the established classroom environment. Researchers interviewed eight mathematics teachers to see how they were integrating Khan Academy into the mathematics classroom. According to the teachers, they carefully thought about whether or not Khan Academy was appropriate to use in the classroom. It is very hard not to realize that technology has overpowered education in many ways. “Technology integration is similar to a tidal wave, growing silently in strength, then falling with an unstoppable roar upon those who paid no attention or showed little interest” (Guhlin, 40). Nowadays, computers are almost considered a necessity in the classroom, and are the main component of technology integration. Computers are being used in more numerous ways, besides only being used for basic word processing. With a simple computer, copious availabilities of technologies can be used in the classroom. “The one thing that is so great about the computer is that it does give a lot of instruction--and you don't need to have hearing to take advantage of it” (Anderson, 12). Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low use of technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten of elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful. It can cause many distractions, it can be difficult to use and can take away from learning time.

Technology is becoming more and more dominant in our society.Everyday upgrades are being made and new innovations are being discovered. Technology is all around us whether we want it to be or not: it is the vehicles we drive, it can be found in our homes, and can even be found in the grocery store.Every place we look there is some type of technology.I believe technology has had a major impact on our school systems and is still impacting it today.There are those who do not agree, though, that technology has impacted our schools.Eric Gormly writes, “In fact, many theorists point out the overall impact of technology on education has been quite small, manifesting little discernible change in the classroom.” [1]Yes, there are some schools that are not as advanced as others, but many of them do have a significant amount of technology in them.I find it fascinating that so much technology has been incorporated into our classrooms, but I believe that, even with all of the positive aspects that are associated with technology, there are some negative and even dangerous aspects that should be taken into account.I will be sharing some of the equipment that has been used in the schools, how both the students and the teachers use the equipment, and also the positive and negative effects that technology has had on our schools.
The twenty-first century has arrived, and it has brought some of the most advanced computing technologies into the classroom; this leaves us with a very important question, do we really need technology, such as iPads or computers, implemented in our learning plans? As a student that has taken entire courses on iPads or computers, I can tell you that the former is not the case. There are plenty of reasons to teach about technological advances in each individual field of learning, but, more often than not, technology is unreliable and distracting for students. Not to mention that methods of maintenance rehearsal, like taking notes by hand, are more effective for recollection of information than staring into a screen. The bottom line is, using technology as a tool for education in the classroom is not necessary because it can inhibit the way students learn material.
In less than a decade, computer use progressed from programming classes for a few of the better students, to literacy classes for all students, to the integration of computers and technology into the curriculum. Now, there is a goal for educators to use technology as a tool in efforts to teach more effectively by using a variety of strategies to meet different needs in a diverse classroom. This will take training and commitment to keep up in an area that changes quickly, but the benefits to teachers and students are greater that the effort it will take to stay informed; computers increase productivity of students and make learning a fun experience. They help students become better problem-solvers instead of just rote learners.
Modern technology has made it so much easier to obtain educational information for classroom or homework assignments. It offers educational games that stimulate the brain and help children who have difficulties focusing on traditional teaching and learning procedures. College students are even taking advantage of online courses that many colleges are offering as an alternative to physically attending classes. Technology has shown a shift from a focus on a student’s memorization to their problem solving. Through technology’s use, learning opportunities have become unrestricted by time or place, allowing lifelong learning. Student use of technology through communications can also help to enhance access to a career and continued education. Students are more likely to use a computer to get help because they can to it themselves. Technology is helping students to become independent.
