When looking at custom t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, water bottles, etc. you may see different print methods that were used, such as silk screening or heat transfers. Both process have their advantages and disadvantages. A lot of the decision of which method to use will come down to the number of items being produced. For small batches, maybe fewer than ten, it may be cheaper to go with a heat transfer process, but with larger quantities, the times savings will counteract the setup cost and it will wind up costing less all together. When a design is produced using the silk screening method, actual screens are used in the process. Putting it very simply, the screen is exposed using an expose unit to make a sort of stencil for the design. Ink is spread over the screen, so when you press down with a squeegee, the ink passes through to the object underneath only in the areas you want. Sadly, only one color per screen can be used so depending on how large the design is and the number of colors wanted in the design, you’ll need multiple screens to complete your design. The costs of silk screening can also be quite expensive. Many silk screening companies will ask for the buyers to order in bulk amounts so that the cost of production can be justified and the company can possibly break even.
