This allow for more in class research assignment to be used. The modern work field is requiring more familiarity with technology, teaching kids how too properly use online resources and technology can benefit them when they are placed in jobs that require the use of technology. The use of online gradebooks and assignment planners help students that miss school get needed work and keep their grades in checked. The capabilities of the Internet today are unending, and offer many positive benefits to a student. A person can log onto a search engine and enter any topic that they want to learn more about.
Initially, I wanted to learn computers to allow me to excel in the working world. The transition from accounting to computer science was both scary and a challenging. These concerns I had as a student have remained with me and I draw upon them to teach my classes. I have three basic beliefs that I incorporate in my teaching philosophy: (1) guide students to recognize and fully understand the fundamental concepts in computer programming; (2) help students develop their critical thinking skills to allow them to apply the fundamentals to more advanced concepts; and (3) communicate with the students to encourage them to become independent thinkers which will allow them to ultimately excel in their careers. As important as the first principle is, the concepts can be rather boring to a student.
The Pros and Cons of Technology in the Classroom There are both positive and negative changes in the education genre as far as computer technology is concerned. In this paper, I will give my personal views on both the positive and negative changes, along with quotes of the views of some professionals. I will also reference some of the myths, and the realities to those myths, about computer technology and its effects on education. First of all, I feel that computers are a positive aspect, for the most part, in the education of children. When, prior to computers, students had to learn most everything via memorization or lecture and notes, they now have the opportunity for more “hands-on” learning.
The teacher is no longer the center of attention. They may just play the roll of the launch pad, meaning they provide project goals, and give guidelines and resources. Because of the teachers new role it really makes the students have to think more, and become a little more independent. Computers are a great impact for the roles of teachers and students. Computers not only change the way the classroom is taught in education.
The use of computers in school classrooms would revolutionize the atmosphere of learning. Computer skills would prepare students for a technologically influenced future. One option is for school administrators to block certain websites. This decision would eliminate students from getting easily distracted.
That was my main goal to take ED 508-OL, Technology as Pedagogy. This course has not only affirmed my goal to seamlessly integrate more technology tools into my everyday classroom, it also given me principles, guidelines and many practical tools to do that. I would very much agree with what Sharp wrote in 2009 on p. 337 that because of the increased access to computers, teachers were concerned about the effects the computer has on instructions. Her brief rundown of some of the important research studies on computer-assisted instruction took away my doubts and affirmed my goal. From my own teaching experience, I can certainly say that to motivate students is one of my most important tasks.
One of the pros of using computers in class is that computers can be used as a tutor. Some students learn better if someone other than the teacher is teaching them. The reason some students like to use the computer as a tutor is because they can learn at their own pace and they can also make the computer repeat the material until they understand it. The more that students want to learn, the more they will actually learn. This point may seem obvious, but the use of computers in classrooms is a relatively new concept. When students are actually interested in what they are learning, the student will be able to maintain focus for much longer. Computers also enable students to learn at a faster or slower pace.

(Besnoy, 2006, p.34) Although there is a learning curve to any new technology, there are also great benefits that it can provide. For example, using technology-based assessments and clickers not only record and give feedback on student performance quickly, they also help teachers to identify problem areas to address. Dunleavy and Heinecke (2008) sum these studies up well, “The results suggest that 1:1 laptop instruction can increase student achievement under certain conditions.” Though that statement is rather vague, it is the key to putting these studies in perspective. Identifying the teaching styles and classroom environments in which laptops are beneficial and those in which laptops are a distraction is the ultimate task. Laptops have the potential to revolutionize the way teachers teach. They give teachers the ability to create relevant learning activities that directly involve students in the learning process. Unfortunately, existing teacher practices often limit this potential.
