Ecstasy in Australia Ecstasy or “E” or “molly” all share a common root, MDMA. Ecstasy is a hallucinogenic drug which can greatly affect one’s mind. The use of Ecstasy throughout the world has greatly increased over the years due to the easiness of obtaining it. However, Ecstasy is more common in one country rather than the rest. In Australia, Ecstasy is the highest abused illicit drug in the country; Ecstasy greatly affects their economy, their population and their public policies. Australia has spent a great amount of years battling the fight against drug abuse. One drug in particular keeps reappearing, Ecstasy. According to the International Narcotics Control board (INCB), “Australia has been very successful at reducing drug deaths and the use of heroin...the result has been a move to drugs like ecstasy, which are regarded by many people as less dangerous.” (Watters 1). Although Australia has been able to reduce the use of other illegal drugs in their country, the usage of Ecstasy continues to grow and feed on their population. Australia has been working on finding new ways to keep certain drugs out of their country, such as Heroin, and has been successful but due to the lack of heroin in the country, many choose to turn to easier more obtainable drugs, such as Ecstasy. Over the years the laws and regulations regarding Ecstasy have undergone significant development and have become more serious than the years past. The Australian Police and Drug Info organization issued a statement saying, “Ecstasy is illegal. Federal and state laws provide penalties for possessing, using, making or selling ecstasy. Drug laws in Australia distinguish between those who use drugs and those who supply or traffic drugs.” (APDI 7).
