Introduction
This essay seeks to discuss and understand sustainability and what constitutes the successful implementation of sustainability specifically in the built environment related to town planners and the challenges that arise during the implementation of this goal. It draws on a case study for Curitiba in Brazil as evidence that sustainability can be achieved, however in my view sustainability cannot be achieved this will be discussed throughout the essay.
Urbanization
Allen states that “it is now widely acknowledged that the impact of urbanization will continue to bring about major global and local changes well into the current century, as many countries in the developing world are presently in, or about to enter, the high-growth and

Reading the article “City Solution” introduce students to previous solution to urbanization. Greenbelt are said to be like a ring of green space that prevent the growth of a city. The original idea derived from Ebenezer Howard who saw the negative side of urbanization and come up with a theory to migrate people to the rural area and resist the dispersion of poorly managed urbanization. Howard’s original idea was to prevent the city from overcrowding and provide the city with more greens. At present, even though urbanization continue to grow, human are reacting to it with a new dimension and put more thoughts in planning the city to prevent Howard’s horror from his living in London during the 20th century.
The term “Sustainability” has many definitions. The most basic definition of sustainability is the capacity to continue or keep moving forward. A thing that is sustainable can be repeated, reused, or recycled because it still has resources to keep creating it. There are what are called the “three pillars of sustainability.” The three factors that true sustainability depends on is social equity, environmental preservation, and economic viability. (Wessier, 3). In order for there to be social sustainability, communities and people need to be treated equally for there to be a chance to eradicate global poverty and ending the environmental exploitation of poor communities
This paper analyzes sustainability as a sociomaterial practice at the waterfront of João Pessoa from its everyday life and from the actions of its Management Committee. Authors understand sustainability as a daily sociomaterial practice that was not prescribed, and which emerges from, perpetuates and is modified through daily interactions between humans and non-humans. According to sociomateriality, these are the constitutive elements of all social reality. Authors present the ethnomethodology approach as an alternative to study the issue – ethnomethodology can be understood here as a theoretical approach to practice studies, as well as a methodological approach to understand everyday life phenomena. Therefore, the practice was ethnomethodologicaly investigated to check its daily accomplishments from which authors aimed to comprehend how this practice happened in the context of João Pessoa’s waterfront.
Sustainability grows into a collective tenure in commercial morals, environs and is extensively used by the administrations, businesses, advisers etc. In recent times the conception of sustainability is widened, nowadays it not only comprisesecologicaldeliberation but also monetary and communityconcern. (Elkington, 1998).

Sustainability is a concept with a diverse array of meanings and definitions – a widely used glamorous, ambiguous, ambivalent and vague concept that is used by different stakeholder groups in various ways. Presumably to avoid noodling over a terminology or to avoid the confrontation with a definition, most widely the concept is broken down a planning process (c.f. e.g. Döring & Muraca, 2010). That is why most common sustainability is understood as sustainable development.1
I consider it’s not very appropriate to say “sustainable X” because these “X”s are only sub-systems which exchange energy and materials within a larger overall system. Only a single small system reaching the “equivalence of sustainability” (if this ever exists) doesn’t mean the whole system is sustainable. That is to say, the hierarchy and complexity of systematical thinking must be taken into consideration of the definition of “sustainable city”. We should evaluate the city-system in its ecosystem and context. Sustainable is used to describe the overall complex system in which there are sub-systems exchanging energy and

Sustainability can be considered as multidisciplinary concept and as a result cannot be defined precisely. The basic concept of sustainability is ‘’the ability of something to sustain or can be maintenance’ ’More over sustainability is the improvement that fulfils present requirements without confining or yielding the possibility to keep satisfying them later on efficiently and productively. Besides sustainability improvement does not centre just in the development phase of a building however can be phased in the overall nearby economy and social order.
Surely there exist cities that are determined to transform into more eco-friendly representatives of urban civilization, yet these efforts are typically focused on minimizing the harmful output of cities rather than rew...
Sustainability simply defined to me as balancing act between the development of sustainability is necessary for both planet Earth and humans to survive. This is reinforced in the World Commission on Environment and Development report (1987) that sustainable development must meet the needs of the present without compromising the well-being of future generations”. The Earth Charter Organization widened the idea of sustainability to respect for a culture of peace, universal human rights, nature, and economic justice (What is sustainability?, n.d.).
Sustainability planning should be made on the local, national and international levels. We need to be able to utilize our economic and natural resources in a way that will enhance our lives but not inflict damage to the environment. For example, when trees are cut down for paper production they should be re-planted to prevent massive deforestation of our planets forests/natural environments. “What might appear sustainable or unsustainable on a local scale may not be at a global scale.” (Braun, 2005: 639). This is why as many people as can be taught about sustainability should be taught, so as to make people aware of their actions on the environment and how they impact on the ecology, community, economy and the generations to follow.
We all know the urbanization rate is an index to value the development of a country. However, though urbanization provides great convenience to some individuals, it also brings about negative effects. Problems such as pollution, overcrowded and the high unemployment appear during the process of urbanization and they are hard to cope with. In face of the sequence of problems, a new way of development ----sustainable development was put forward. Just like its literal meaning, the word sustainability has something to do with continuity. It was used since 1980s and first appeared in Britain law in 1993. Sustainable development can help solve parts of the problem caused by urbanization, including environmental damage, overuse of resources, and natural disasters.
There are different approaches in sustainable development. Diesendorf (2000) had illustrated that the goal or destination of sustainable development was the tight relationship between sustainabi...
