In Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants”, the short story describes an American man and a girl traveling to Madrid to have an abortion. Important factors to view in this essay are the relationship between the American and Jig, the symbolism and choices. It is apparent that Jig yearns for a romantic long-term relationship with her boy friend; however, she is starting to see the chances dwindle. Will Jig make the decision independently, or will she allow the American to continue to be the frontrunner in the decision? The author provides us with, attitude, symbols and hints that lead me to believe that Jig will abstain from having the abortion. Jig realizes that she may be without her boyfriend whether she has the abortion or not. Jig also realizes that the relationship has not been one based on true love. The main point is to identify that there is a crisis and to realize that life presents many complicated situations in which a decision must be executed.
