Mission Statement The Baylor University Medical Center’s Department of Graduate Medical Education is committed to excellence, innovation, and leadership in meeting the health care needs of the community and people we serve, and to provide the very best medical, surgical, and biomedical research. The vision and goals of our medical residency programs is to train residents to become safe, competent physicians who can perform well, practice independently, provide good outcomes for patients, and minimize complications. This involves teaching residents both the cognitive and technical skills required to perform. We dedicate ourselves to the fundamental rights of our individual patients to dignity and privacy. Good teaching is about humor at any level. It’s about being self-deprecating and not taking yourself too seriously. It’s about making innocuous jokes, so that the ice breaks and resident’s learn in a relaxed atmosphere where you, like them, are human with your own share of faults and shortcomings. 7. Exemplary teaching is about caring, nurturing, and developing the minds and talents. It’s about devoting time, often invisible to every resident. It’s about thankless hours designing and preparing materials to further enhance learning. 8. A good educational program is supported by strong and visionary leadership, with very tangible institutional support, resources, personnel and funds. As important, a quality education center is continually reinforced by an overarching vision that transcends the entire institution. From attending faculty, to resident teachers, and guest lecturers which is reflected in not only what is said, but more importantly by what is done. 9. A good teaching environment is about mentoring between senior and junior residents, teamwork, and being recognized and promoted by one’s peers. Motivating and creating positive feelings’ regarding the subject matter being presented makes the learner feel good and empowered by the knowledge they are gaining, and should be a goal of all medical educators. Teachers of medical resident’s, intern’s, and medical students must realize that flexibility is important to a proper learning atmosphere and that encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and expected comments is part of the learning and teaching process. As a Faculty Member you will often experience fear, joy, feelings of tentativeness, and feelings of extreme confidence and satisfaction. Handle fear with good preparation; confidence brought forward with good preparation is the easiest way to allay fear.
