The vision and goals of our medical residency programs is to train residents to become safe, competent physicians who can perform well, practice independently, provide good outcomes for patients, and minimize complications. Good teaching is about humor at any level. It’s about being self-deprecating and not taking yourself too seriously. It’s about making innocuous jokes, so that the ice breaks and resident’s learn in a relaxed atmosphere where you, like them, are human with your own share of faults and shortcomings. 7. Exemplary teaching is about caring, nurturing, and developing the minds and talents. It’s about devoting time, often invisible to every resident. It’s about thankless hours designing and preparing materials to further enhance learning. 8. A good educational program is supported by strong and visionary leadership, with very tangible institutional support, resources, personnel and funds. As important, a quality education center is continually reinforced by an overarching vision that transcends the entire institution. From attending faculty, to resident teachers, and guest lecturers which is reflected in not only what is said, but more importantly by what is done. 9. A good teaching environment is about mentoring between senior and junior residents, teamwork, and being recognized and promoted by one’s peers. Motivating and creating positive feelings’ regarding the subject matter being presented makes the learner feel good and empowered by the knowledge they are gaining, and should be a goal of all medical educators. Teachers of medical resident’s, intern’s, and medical students must realize that flexibility is important to a proper learning atmosphere and that encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and expected comments is part of the learning and teaching process. I am excited to be submitting my application to Georgetown University School of Medicine, as this school’s mission and values reflect my own beliefs on the role of a physician. I believe that there is no fixed template to healthcare; medicine and health will vary across time, regions, and individuals, and as future physicians, it is crucial for us to recognize that. The road to gaining admission to medical school and becoming a physician is long, difficult, and intensely competitive. Once admitted, however, medical students spend the first two years primarily in laboratories and classrooms learning basic medical sciences. They also learn how to take medical histories, perform complete physical examinations, and recognize symptoms of diseases. During their third and fourth years, the medical students work under supervision at teaching hospitals and clinics. Following medical school, new physicians must complete a year of internship that emphasizes either general medical practice or one specific specialty and provides clinical experience in various hospital services. Physicians then continue in residency training, which lasts an additional three to six years, depending on the specialty. Immediately after residency, they are eligible to take an examination to earn board certification in their chosen specialty. I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. “We look for medicine to be an orderly field of knowledge and procedure. But it is not. It is an imperfect science, an enterprise of constantly changing knowledge, uncertain information, fallible individuals, and at the same time lives on the line.” There is more to being a great physician than having intellect, clinical experience, and competence in the medical field. A doctor must be daring and genuinely driven to positively impact a patient’s life. A doctor needs stand tall, even in the face of uncertainty.
This paper examines the mission, vision, and values of Alvarado Hospital Medical Center and describes how it applies to the United States Council of Catholic Bishop’s Teachings. But before we can correlate the two, it is imperative to understand the differences in a mission statement vs. a vision statement and what it means for a hospital to have core values. Given the way the business world is working today, organizations need some form of direction to help prevent deviation from their purpose. In order to do this companies have come to use what is known as directional strategies. The concept of directional strategies encompasses an organizations mission statement, vision statement, values and strategic goals.
The Purpose of the American Medical Association is to improve delivery of health care, provide better medical education and to improve the health of the patient ( American Medical Association, 2017a).
This experience will definitely influence my future practice; my action plan would be using those teaching strategies in preparing students to face the clinical environment, to ensure optimal patients’ health outcomes and it helps to build a competent and independent clinician.

In the 1980’s managed care has arisen and policymakers became worried the United States was not training a sufficient amount of primary care doctors. Success was in the hands of these physicians. Research shows that the learning environment encompasses more than just the classroom that learning and teaching takes place. Many factors contribute to a learning environment, including the students, teachers, parents, school staff, policy makers, specialists, support staff, community members and the different learning spaces and resources available. This reflective journal will discuss some ways that teachers can set up the learning environment to maximise teaching and learning and some potential advantages and difficulties for me as a new teacher.
An effective teacher will excite, inspire and motivate students to be active in their learning, investigate new areas of knowledge and make connections to future learning (Whitton et al 2010). When a teacher is successful, their students are motivated, mutually respectful and ready to build on their knowledge and solve real-world problems. To be a teacher of value, one must have many skills and qualities to cater for a diversity of learners and their individual development; this includes many personal traits that are noticed students.
I have had many excellent teachers throughout my educational experience, some of these have been wonderful teachers that have set lessons to life. Others have been boring, overly strict, unapproachable, and at times unknowledgeable. I have learned valuable lessons from both. A positive and fun learning environment makes students want to be in the classroom. The first step in learning is that the children must want to be there.
