United Airlines
United Airlines is one of the largest airlines in the United States and worldwide. Also, it is ranked as the oldest commercial airline that was founded by Walter Varney. United Airlines started as an Air Mail Service and then extended its services to be an Air Carrier. In 1927, William Boeing started his own airline, Boeing Air Transport, and started buying any other air mail companies, which included the Varney’s Air Mail Company. After a while, Boeing started manufacturing aircraft and parts, which allowed him to extend his company to a bigger organization. Also, within Boeing’s company, he bought several airports to expand his organization. In 1929, Boeing’s company has changed its name to be United Aircraft and Transport Corp. (UATC).
After a while, they have realized that the airline has more capacity to carry passengers. So they hired a flight attendant to help passengers and created an air carrier for passengers transport. On 1930, UATC created an airline based in Chicago and called it National Air Transport Inc., which is a bigger airline with a larger fleet. After a while, UATC needed a company to organize its operations and branches, so they created a company called United Air Lines Inc.
After the Air mail Act in 1934, which separated the ownership of aircraft manufacturer and airlines, the President of the UATC had to be resigned and he moved to another airline at the time, which is Trans-Canada Airlines, now Air Canada. After this fall, Boeing’s company was broken into several parts, the first one was aircraft manufacturing, the second part is the parts supplier, and the third part is the United Air Lines airline group. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) owes its creation to many significant events in aviation history. One of them includes the creation of the Air Mail Act of 1925, which spearheaded the creation of commercial airlines that worked for a profit. (FAA, 2011) This act leads to rapid growth in the development of aircraft and of air traffic. The increasing volume of air traffic, lead to the early development of air traffic control, which was based on visual signals. (FAA, 2011)
In the 1970s, TACA Airlines entered its jet age when it acquired its first jet, A BAC One Eleven. The One Eleven was used between the 1970s and the early 1980s, then later replaced by the Boeing 737-200. Until 1980, TACA Airlines was owned by a Unites States company and was headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana under administration of the Kriete Family of El Salvador. The Boeing Company originally started out as the Pacific Aero Products Co., which was founded on July 15, 1916. The name was changed about a year later to The Boeing Airplane Company. The Boeing Company stayed relatively small until World War I when they were selected by Navy officials to produce an order for 50 model C's planes for the war efforts. The company continued to prosper and by the late 1950s, Boeing President William Allen knew that the company had the scientists, the experience and the facilities to lead the company into uncharted territories. He was right, Boeing has emerged as the leading aerospace company in the world today.
Southwest Airlines is competing with "Shuttle by United" head to head in about 9 routes. United has just announced that it is discontinuing its Oakland - Ontario route and hiking the fares in all the 14 routes by $10, which calculated to be 14.5% increase in the fare. Southwest has to respond effectively to these unexpected developments and has to act accordingly while maintaining their current low fare image and increasing their daily operating profits. We have considered the elasticity of the market to be 1.15.
In the airline industry, Southwest Airlines is considered a true innovator. By shaking up the rules of flying and improving upon inefficient industry norms, Southwest has quickly grown by leaps and bounds. From the very start, Southwest Airlines' goals were to make a profit, achieve job security for every employee, and make flying affordable for more people (Southwest,2007). Southwest has not strayed from these goals. It does not buy huge aircrafts, fly international routes or try to go head to head with the major carriers; and thanks to a great planning, Southwest airlines has become the most successful airline company in the U.S., if not the world.

If the short haul passenger was the backbone of Southwest Airlines success, then their 737s were the lifelines that supported it. By choosing the 737 as the airplane for all of Southwest's flights, the company saved time and resources in training its employees. The crew could be easily substituted for one another due to the extensive training on the 737. Low costs and, therefore, low fares are an enormous competitive advantage, when combined with their high-quality and loyal workforce. A very unique culture was found at Southwest Airlines among all of its employees.

Two years prior, Continental and United Airlines combined operations in a merger that formed an extensive route network, afforded expanded business relationships with suppliers and was expected to increase profit (Cederholm, 2014). Compared with the merger of Delta and Northwest, the United-Continental marriage faced numerous problems, with labor problems the most outstanding issue. System integration, technology systems, and union labor contracts caused other problems that eventually led to customer service deterioration, resulting in heavy fines levied by the Transportation Department.

Airplanes and air travel had always fascinated Juan Trippe and with family inheritance, he gave the airline industry a shot. Pan Am started with a few unsuccessful business ventures by Trippe after World War 1. “In 1927, facing a Post Office deadline for the commencement of mail carriage, Pan Am had no working equipment for its sole airmail contract between Key West and Havana. Fortunately for Pan Am, a pilot with his Fairchild seaplane arrived at Key West and was willing to carry the mail to Cuba for the start up operation. It is fitting that Pan Am’s first flight would be over water, since the airline would pioneer overseas routes throughout its history” (Grace, 2011, para. 3). These small “air taxi” services were merged and formed what is new know as Pan American Airways. Trippe’s bet of starting an airline based off of utilizing the Air Mail Act of 1925 gave him the revenue to venture into passenger world-wide
While sitting in Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport, one cannot help but to notice and feel an overwhelming dominant presence of one particular airline. Delta as we know it today, traces its roots way back to 1924. Huff Daland Dusters was founded as the world’s first aerial crop dusting organization. In 1928 the company became Delta Air Service, and the following year Delta carried its first passengers over a route stretching from Dallas, Texas to Jackson, Mississippi with stops in Shreveport and Monroe, Louisiana. In 1941, the company moved its headquarters from Monroe to Atlanta, Georgia.
