Our life styles are something we work for. Ones stability in their work place depicts their living situations outside of work. Portland is one of the biggest homeless communities in the United States. This is mainly to unemployment rates and bad decisions. Our government says they are “trying” to help make those rates go down but it’s something that all of the people who are fighting to find a job could disagree with. I hear about all these new jobs being put out there but most of the time, they are for more qualified individuals who have experience in that area for hire. It’s rare that I see jobs open for anyone including those with no experience. We should create more jobs to subsidize the unemployment rate, because financial stability is the basis of growth.
While growing up, my family and I had a rough time trying to stay in one place. My mother was going job to job trying to get something that would allow stability for our family. My grandmother’s house was our safe haven. When my sister and I were there, we knew we had nothing to worry about, but it was the total opposite when we were with our mother. Life was hard because my mother could not keep a job nor find one when in need. We knew our grandmothers house to be our house. That’s where we went when something didn’t work out. We didn’t understand at that young age, but when we started to get older it became more of a reality that we lacked financial independence. I strive to this day to make sure that my family has that financial independence I always wanted and that my son can have a great childhood with no worries or distractions from his future.
In the city of Portland, there are millions of people without a job. When you go down town, there are, to give an estimate...

...th the issue of not enough jobs or just not enough people employed. I can see Portland’s unemployment rate dropping if we change certain things. That is what will ultimately help us a city. Also I think it will help bring more money to our city, and get people off the streets. I hope the stress of this rate will one day disappear and we can live our lives the best we know how.
Portland has one of the highest homeless rates in American. This is due to our unemployment rate and bad decisions that we make in our everyday lives. To change these things, we all need to come together to find a way to make it better. The government is one of the key components. Employers need to make new jobs more open and easier to find and our government needs to make new jobs for our unemployed. In order to grow in life, we need financial stability. In many communities across our country, mainly vacation or resort locales, a lack of affordable housing is seen. As a result, workers must drive around thirty miles out of town to find an apartment cheap enough to support their low wage earnings. Since low-wage earners usually have a lack of savings, they are unable to put down money in advance for a cheap apartment. For instance, Ehrenreich explains that “If you can't put up the two months' rent you need to secure an apartment, you end up paying through the nose for a room by the week.” (Ehrenreich 27). Ehrenreich ended up facing the physical toll of handling two jobs at one just to provide for the needs of basic survival. This can be seen as an important issue within our society because workers need to have access to affordable housing otherwise they will get restless and move somewhere closer to their current housing. Not only will this decrease the number of staff on hand for certain locations, the issue of no affordable housing will eventually put people out onto the streets. Our society constantly puts forward the need to make money off of high prices, instead of helping those with little to no money. An unchecked issue like this would grow into something far worse which at the time would be very difficult to handle. The notion of taking two or more jobs at the same time just
For the past year I have watched my younger sister struggle to support herself and her now 11 month old baby. She makes more than minimum wage. She has struggled to the point where she was evicted and now lives with me. I have also experienced struggling on low pay. When I was 18 I was kicked out of my family’s house, and I was only making $8 an hour. There were days where I had to choose between paying rent and getting my electricity shut off, just because I couldn’t work enough hours to pay all of my bills. It can be very scary to only make minimum wage and have to support yourself. There are changes that need to be made so that every person can live properly with any job.
Yet another problem that could easily be solved by relocating the homeless is that of unemployment. American companies...
Homelessness in the United States has been an important subject that the government needs to turn its attention to. There has been announced in the news that the number of the homeless people in many major cities in the United States has been increasing enormously. According to United States Interagency Council on Homelessness reported that there was an estimation of 83,170 individuals have experienced chronic homelessness on the streets of the United States’ streets and shelters on only a single night of January 2015, which is a small decrease of only 1% from the previous year (People Experiencing Chronic Homelessness, n.d.). The United States must consider this subject that most of the people underestimate it and not pay attention
Ratner, Lizzy. "The Economic Recession Is Increasing Homelessness." Homelessness. Ed. Tamara Thompson. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2012. Opposing Viewpoints. Rpt. from "Boom Town and Bust City: A Tale of Two New Yorks." The Nation (14 Feb. 2011). Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 12 Dec. 2013.
This great nation of awesome power and abundant resources is losing the battle against homelessness. The casualties can be seen on the street corners of every city in American holding an ?I will work for food? sign. Homeless shelters and rescue missions are at full capacity. There is no room at the inn for the nation?s indigent. Anyone who has studied this issue understands that homelessness is a complex problem. Communities continue to struggle with this socio-economic problem while attempting to understand its causes and implement solutions. The public and private sectors of this country are making a difference in the lives of the homeless by addressing the issues of housing, poverty and education.
Homelessness can happen to anyone unexpectedly. Many poor people are at the risk of homelessness. The cost of living and trying to find affordable housing can be very difficult. Many who are homeless are in poverty, have a mental illness, or addictions. Homelessness happens from personal, as well as structural factors. Many aren’t able to make enough for rent, as well as, utilities, food, and other expenses each month. More than 6 million Americans pay more than half of their income towards rent (Reamer, 1989). The trend is once someone becomes homeless, it is likely they will be homeless repeatedly. To end homelessness, affordable housing will have to be created because it is peoples largest single expenditure (Anderson, 2013).
...is to understand the factors that lead people into homelessness, that keep them homeless, and how they can recover from homelessness. Advocates for the homeless have proposed policies range from taking preventative measures, such as making housing and health care affordable, to policies that deal with individuals that are already homeless, such as rapid rehousing and redefining what it means to be homeless. Although many of the experts disagree on how the homeless epidemic should be handled, many acknowledge that the federal government plays an inexpendable role in helping the homeless. Homelessness is, obviously, a complex issue, but like all difficult issues it must be undertaken. It has become clear that homelessness is not something that will eradicate itself given time, homelessness will continue to grow and evolve unless an outside force stops it in its tracks.
Here in Tahoe, we are lucky enough to experience a great quality of life, and only a few have to face the horrible life of poverty and homelessness. However, nationwide, even right outside the basin, homelessness is a growing epidemic across the country. There are many ways one can become homeless; for the most part poverty. There are also different concentrations of homeless in different types of terrain, such as urban or suburban areas. Last, there is the ever- growing homeless population, and how much money it costs us for others to live in poverty. These are the questions we ask ourselves about homelessness, and the only way we can help is to know the facts about this lingering subject.
Homelessness is a vast predicament in America and around the world. It is severely overlooked as people don’t really think of homelessness as real world problem. However, there have been ways that people have tried to fix the problem. They have come up with homeless shelters, emergency shelters, food banks and soup kitchens. These solutions have limitations though, which will hopefully come to an end.
Homelessness has become a serious problem in today’s society. Despite the organizations that help multitudes of homeless people, homelessness is continually increasing. In recent years, America’s culture has been changing due to economic, political, and social issues. These issues have caused a lot of stress on America resulting in abject poverty in several cities. Poverty is not nationwide, but if dealt with lightly, the affects can be catastrophic. Homelessness is increasing more than ever, and research proves that changing culture contributes to rising amount of homelessness.
When my father lost his job, our family lost many of the comforts that we once took for granted due to a reduced income. Money became a very large issue and with it came many limitations on wants and desires that were so accessible before my father lost his job. Furthermore, the loss of his job brought about immense shame for my father. Yet, rather than become embarrassed over my father losing his job and sad due to the fact that I could no longer have as many material possessions, I came to accept the different lifestyle. By letting go and accepting, the room was made for new experiences, joys, understandings, and lessons.
As the youngest of five children she was often overlooked. The pride of the family often overrode the opportunity to receive health care, handouts and a decent chance to become something. My mother spent her childhood in a tiny house with her family and many relatives. She was never given the opportunities to excel in learning and life like my generation has. My grandfather was a carpenter and on that living fed many hungry mouths. But despite this already unfortunate lifestyle my mother maintained good grades and was on a path to overcoming her misfortune.
Homelessness is a crucial factor as to why Americans don’t achieve the ideal “American Dream”. Homelessness is a social issue that affects a widespread group of people, ranging from single individuals to families each year. Many of those who are currently homeless, don’t choose to be homeless, but are forced into living on the streets for reasons such as a financial crisis, divorce, unemployment, mental illness, drug or alcohol abuse, or even a natural disaster that triggers the rising problem of how these individuals will survive. Annually, 3.5 Americans experience an episode of homelessness. That is 75,000 people experiencing homeless each night that others of more comfortable means will never have to experience. (Thompson). While in school, Mom didn’t have it easy. Not only did she raise a daughter and take care of a husband, she had to deal with numerous setbacks. These included such things as my father suffering a heart attack and going on to have a triple by-pass, she herself went through an emergency surgery, which sat her a semester behind, and her father also suffered a heart attack. Mom not only dealt with these setbacks, but she had the everyday task of things like cooking dinner, cleaning the house and raising a family. I don’t know how she managed it all, but somehow she did.
