Equipment modifications
Adjusting your workstation equipment heavily influences the ability to perform an exam with proper ergonomic techniques. Examples of adjustments that can be made to the work station include, chair type, chair height, keyboard position, monitor position, as well as table position (HSA, 2014). Different equipment modifications will need to be made to suit the sonographer’s ergonomic needs for every exam. For example, Carolyn Coffin discuses techniques related to endovaginal scanning. She explains that while performing an endovaginal exam you should move the ultrasound machine to the end of the table providing close access to the machine and keyboard. She also suggests that you move your chair to sit between the patient’s legs; this will provide an ergonomically proper position for the sonographer. By making proper ergonomic changes based off exam type sonographers will alleviate pain as well as aid in MSI prevention (Coffin, 2014).
Chair adjustments
Chair height should be adjusted so your feet are not dangling and can be rested firmly on the floor, or on a footrest; alternatively when standing, weight should be evenly distributed over both feet (HSA, 2014). If chair height cannot be adjusted, a cushion should be added to sit on to obtain desired height in addition to providing lumbar support (Coffin, 2014). There are chairs designed specifically for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, chairs that are built to suit ergonomic needs and MSI prevention (Sound Ergonomics, 2014). The HAG Capisco (figure 5) is a chair that can accommodate different sitting positions while providing proper posture support. The HAG Capisco is designed for untraditional sitting; you can sit on it sideways, back to front, or front to ba...

...areness and implementing prevention methods. Injury prevention involves education and use of proper ergonomics, with these tools sonographers can change their behaviors reducing the risk of MSK injury and pain. Becoming aware and enforcing the importance of risk reduction awareness will also have a positive impact on your career. Encouraging proper ergonomics, prevention methods, and gaining a solid understanding of MSK health will give you the knowledge and skills you need to help reduce MSK injury and have a long career in the field you love.
Kris Harrington and Andrea Hampton encourage students to take the time to stretch, use proper ergonomics, adjust your equipment and think of your self, “be selfish”, it will only take a few minutes and those minutes will drastically increase the length of your career (Hampton, Harrington, personal communication, 2014).
As an ultrasound technician/sonographer I will have the ability to see dangerous defects within the human anatomy and begin a lifelong profession with many benefits. The Ultrasound was first invented in the early 1900’s and was surprisingly not used to produce photos of a fetus. In 1917 Paul Langen a marine life scientist used a form of ultrasound equipment in his attempt to detect submarines. After many failed attempts at using high frequency sound waves Dr. Ian Donald and his team in Glasgow, Scotland invented the first ultrasound machine in 1957. Dr. Donald even tested his machine on patients within a year of completing the invention, by the late 1950’s ultrasounds became routine in Glasgow hospitals.
I have always been fascinated with the medical field ever since I was little, my first choice for electives were always health science and anatomy classes. After my cousin, Deanna, had her first child and receive her first ultrasound, I knew that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The ultrasound technician had made her feel so comforted and just made the entire experience enjoyable for everyone; I’m eager to be able to start my life with a job that I know I will love. Anytime that I meet someone who is in the field themselves, I always ask questions and listen to what they do throughout the day to get some real insight on what being a technician really entails.
Principles of Physics in Ultrasound Physics has become an important part of medicine allowing specialist doctors and radiographers to rapidly access a patient’s condition and to help in long-term diagnosis. This enables doctor’s to treat patients before their condition deteriorates. This procedure would not be possible without the use of X-rays, CAT scans, MRI scans, ultrasound and endoscopes, which allow doctors to see inside the body with little or no surgery. Without such equipment doctors would be forced to use invasive techniques, which could cause patients more harm as it increases the risk of infection. A sound or ultrasound wave consists of a mechanical disturbance of a medium (gas, liquid or solid) which passes through the medium at a fixed speed.
In the dental field; assistants, dental hygienists, dentists, etc. many employees and employers suffer from ergonomic issues. Ergonomics has always been stressed to be perfected since dental hygiene has been around. Ergonomics is big in any career setting, but as for dental professionals it seems to be a little bit more elevated. The dental field has long struggled with many issues regarding ergonomical positioning and ergonomical inventions and these things have just recently started to come to life. Whether dental hygienists like it or not, ergonomics is still an issue and without correcting certain things in the dental operatory and figuring out new ways of positioning oneself, it will continue to be an issue. There are many disorders, musculoskeletal,
More specifically, ergonomics is the science of designing the job to fit the worker, rather than physically forcing the worker's body to fit the job. " (USDOL & OSHA, 2000, pg.1) Ergonomics starts with the design of each individual piece of equipment and each individual tool a sonographer will use throughout their day. It continues on to the employer to provide the most up to date ergonomically designed equipment available for their employees and training said employees on the company's, US Department of Labor, and OSHA regulations. And
Safety is a primary concern in the health care environment, but there are still many preventable errors that occur. In fact, a study from ProPublica in 2013 found that between 210,000 and 440,000 patients each year suffer preventable harm in the hospital (Allen, 2013). Safety in the healthcare environment is not only keeping the patient safe, but also the employee. If a nurse does not follow procedure, they could bring harm to themselves, the patient, or both. Although it seems like such a simple topic with a simple solution, there are several components to what safety really entails. Health care professionals must always be cautious to prevent any mishaps to their patients, especially when using machines or lifting objects, as it has a higher

Without the use of physics in the medical field today, diagnosis of problems would be challenging, to say the least. The world of medical imaging in particular has benefited greatly from the use of physics.

The article shows the job entail which says “to be involved with the interventional procedures” (Baltimore sun). This means to scan almost every part of the body except for the vascular system, health and or limited pediatrics. Depending on what the patient would be coming in for determines what kind of procedures the patient would need. According to the article “sonographers operate special imaging equipment to create images or to conduct tests” (Baltimore Sun). Meaning the images and test results help physicians assess and diagnose medical conditions. In also helping assist physicians and surgeons during surgical procedures. As a result, the job responsibilities for this career must be taken seriously. Technique is another key factor that will be needed in order to help others. Not many problems can occur with the patient’s appointment or health, if the technician knows how to do the job correctly. This would conclude all the necessities in order to be very successful and main points of view for a Diagnostic Medical
I saw an ad in the newspaper that Merit Corp was hiring for the position of an Ultrasonographer. I’m Madison Willis and I would like a job doing Ultrasonography. I love animals and helping them is something I truly enjoy. I want to make a better life for the animals. With your company they are looking to save animals lives and I would be more then happy to accomplish that task. With this job I would test for tumors, heart problems, and pregnancy. If there is negative news I can comfort the patients and the animals.
Although being academically smart is an important factor for this program, there are also other qualities that are just as important if not more. Some of those qualities that can make you an exceptional sonographer are being compassionate, caring, and being able to work well with others. The reason why I said this is because I believe “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care” (John C. Maxwell). Also it’s critical that you understand the concept of teamwork and that you can work well with others. In this field you need to work with doctors and other caregivers to deliver the best care for the patient. I can assure you that if you give me this opportunity to study in this great program, you will not be disappointed, but in fact be pleased, because I will do whatever it takes to complete this program successfully and become a great diagnostic medical sonographer. I thank you very much for taking the time to read
