Condition description Ulcerative colitis (UL-sur-uh-tiv koe-LIE-tis) is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract. Ulcerative colitis affects the innermost lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. Symptoms usually develop over time, rather than suddenly.Ulcerative colitis can be debilitating and sometimes can lead to life-threatening complications. While it has no known cure, treatment can greatly reduce signs and symptoms of the disease and even bring about long-term remission.
Onset and treatment history Katharine Smith began showing symptoms of the bowel disorder in December of 2012. Plamer of the Mayo Clinic created a proposed treatment package for our next physican. Treatment included a second round of rimicade to be administered every two weeks by infusion despite Katharine showing no signs of improvement after two months on the drug. Dr. Palmer also stressed the urgency of care as if her condition continues to worsen she may be required to undergo surgery to remove several feet of intestines. Such a procedure has a 60% chance to cure her of her ailment, but surgery poses several risks and often present blood clots and intestinal infections. The most likly avenue of treatment will invole biological infusions such as rimicade. During these infusions Katharine is given sedatives which prohibit her from driving for the rest of the day. In the instance of sudden onset of aggressive flare ups in her condition, emergency room visits are often necissary. During these visits Katharine is usually given pretizone and dilaudid. Flare ups in her condition become more frequent depending on diet, stress, and change in routine. However, she has been known to suffer flare ups for no known
