Create UHD VEGOUT 2015. All of the Coordinators Group members participated in the creation of the University of Houston-Downtown’s very first, UHD VEGOUT 2015, event that the two service learning courses collaborated on, to put together. All four of the Coordinators Group members were committed to the overall project. “Committed members work harder, say more, do more…” in a cohesive, and open environment (Yuqing Ren, 2010). Typically, through commitment, participation, cooperativeness, and contributions, the members of the Coordinators Group necessitated a successful event. Through all of their hard-work, dedication, and Groupme, the Coordinators Group members built strong interpersonal connections with one another. Vincent also completed Progress Report #2. He maintained a positive outlook and attitude throughout the reign of the Coordinators Group. Ashley Khan guaranteed that Progress Report #1 was complete, and turned in before it was due. She was also an excellent motivator for the Coordinators Group members and would reinforce the groups’ overall goal of the project. Lartigue Poche played the role of harmonizer, as there were several times that he safeguarded Coordinators Group members from disputes with other groups’ members, as well as with their professor. After his late connection with the Groupme chat for the Coordinators Group, Lartigue was typically available to communicate with his group members. Service-learning is defined as a “course-based, credit-bearing educational experience in which students (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and (b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility” (Bringle & Hatcher, 1995).

The functional area of service-learning is currently emerging as an acknowledged department at an institution of higher education. The theoretical roots of service learning go back to John Dewey, and the early twentieth century. However, current research on service-learning pedagogy dates back only to the early 1990’s. Best practices for the field are still being created as more and more new offices are springing up on campuses throughout the United States and institutions internationally. The reason this functional area is becoming ever popular is due to the positive impact it has on students and most all educational outcomes.
In strategic planning, strength, weakness, opportunity and threat (SWOT) analysis is a tool used to identify those issues most likely to have an impact on a planned change now and in the future (Laureate Education, 2013f; Marquis & Huston, 2015). A SWOT analysis helps an organization further its mission, vision, and values by ensuring the planned change remains true to these statements.
The second, is to participate in a community partnering project. After receiving approval for the community project, to partner and develop a lecture which will be presented to her students. On the following dates, October 8, 13, and 14, R.K. and I continued to work on the community partnering project.

After volunteering three times with the social action committee and high school group from Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church in the previous years, the Houston Food Bank became very familiar both in regards of their history and how their volunteerism works. The Houston Food Bank is a non-profit organization that seeks donations of non-perishable food items to serve the low-income families in eighteen counties across Texas. However, during a recent trip to the food bank with the University of Houston-Downtown College of Business, the interactions with a larger group of classmates became more dynamic. Following participation in an Engaged Department Institute sponsored by Campus Compact, a service-learning requirement was instituted for all majors in the department studied beginning Fall 2002. All faculty were encouraged to incorporate service-learning in their courses. A training session on service-learning was the centerpiece of a departmental retreat in January 2002. In order to develop closer relationships with community agencies, the department hosted a faculty-partnership luncheon the following fall semester. Potential community partners were invited to meet with faculty in an effort to forge new relationships with the University. In order to institutionalize service-learning, all recruitment advertisements specifically mention service-learning and all new hires are expected to include service-learning components in their courses. As a consequence of these efforts, this department has gone from teaching only a few courses with service-learning components to offering twenty five different classes (thirteen courses) by Fall 2002.
Some of the most rewarding times in college are when concepts and ideas connect. This is something that I have found happen semester after semester. No matter the art, journalism or sociology courses I take, ideas from each class repeatedly seem to connect to one another. In Art 338, the heavy focus on service work and engagement in the community also relates to the stories I cover in my journalism and my own interest in community dynamics. A few weeks back, I had the opportunity to interview Haley Madden, Community-based Learning Graduate Assistant through the Morgidge Center. Her research, focusing on health care discrepancies, ties into community service and the idea that individuals can use their work to positively impact others around them.

Universities are becoming extremely active in encouraging community in their university and persuading students to become a part of the whole to get the most out of their college experience. This is shown through encouragement to be involved in numerous groups, dorm bonding activities, Greek life, and numerous other organizations offered in all universities.
The SWOT analysis is a useful tool for identifying our personal strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to our plans and goals. According to a “Fuel My Motivation” article (2010), this analysis considers internal influences that can positively or negatively affect our ability to achieve our goals. The internal factors are our strengths and weaknesses. Also considered are opportunities and threats, which are external influences that can have a positive or negative impact on the ability to achieve our goals. I will share how the self-assessment instruments and self-exercises in this course have contributed to assessing and understanding my strengths and weaknesses. I will also discuss techniques I will use to leverage my strengths and understand my weaknesses. In addition, I will consider opportunities that I can take advantage of and the threats that can possibly impede my progress.
