USA's Involvement in The First World War
There were two main events that led to the USA entering the First
World War. They are:
· The German decision to wage war on any form of shipping near Britain
and the mistake of attacking American vessels with American civilians
on board.
· The 'Zimmermann Telegram'.
The Germans declared the sea around Britain a 'War Zone' and made the
excuse that anything within this zone was fair game and they had the
right to attack and destroy it. This included merchant ships shipping
urgent supplies to Britain and also normal liners shipping people to
and from Britain. The mistake was the sinking of vessels containing
American civilians, which the USA made clear, it would not stand for.
Despite the warnings, German submarines continued to strike at
anything in the area. The most influential of these was the sinking of
the 'Listuania', a British ship sunk with 128 American losses. This
was unacceptable for the Americans and they declared war on the
Germans.

The German’s unrestricted submarine warfare was the main reason for the U.S. to enter war. Wilson had tremendous support from Americans. The Germans had to be stopped. The attacks came without warning killing many innocent people (Winter and Baggett, 1996). The Germans sank numerous ships including our own. The most famous ship sunk was the Lusitiania. Aboard that ship 128 Americans were killed (http://www.angelfire.com/in3/wilson/wilson.html). The Lusitania was torpedoed without any notice. The Lusitania sunk in 18 minutes killing a total of 1198 people (http://www.poltechnic.org/faculty/gfeldmeth/chart.ww1.html).
After looking over some log information from both the USS Greer and Germany’s submarines, I had taken the route that the start of this whole incident was the fault of the British. If not for the British getting involved the way they had, then maybe the German submarine would not have fired torpedoes. To get the American people rallied for war, President Roosevelt had manipulated the American people by using polls and speaking to get fear and anger across the country, but did Roosevelt do the manipulation for the greater good? When looking at all that information about how President Roosevelt had been reacting and talking about this incident, it is obvious that he was trying to get people to agree to war, it is obvious that he was manipulating or at least trying to manipulate the United States to stop Germany, but one of the two big questions is why?
Autonomy and Responsibility: Why the United States Entered World War II World War II was an exceptional war for the United States. The United States emerged from the war as a world superpower and protector of all other nations. There were many reasons why the United States entered World War II, however President Franklin Roosevelt was in some way directly connected to every reason. Roosevelt wanted to enter World War II as soon as it started for political and economic needs. However, the American people did not want to enter in another war, such as World War I, that costs so many lives and money.
World War II was a war that proved to the world the awesome power of the United States. Many events led up to the U.S. involvement in the war, topped off by the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor. Many great people contributed to leading the United State to victory in the war. They include General Douglas MacArthur, General Dwight Eisenhower, and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. World War II also consisted of many major events including Operation Overlord and the U.S. bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Overall the United States played a major role in World War II and displayed their power through strong generals and their initiative and strong leadership in major events.
While the naval war is usually known for only little attention in histories of World War I, the Royal Navy's blockade of Germany played a dangerous role in the War. The U.S. Navy linking with the Royal Navy played a significant role in overcoming the German U-boats in the North Atlantic. The Germany Navy while technically effective disastrously diminished the German war effort. Germany's building of a High Seas Fleet was one of the causes that public view on Britain turned against Germany and that Britain come unto the War. Yet, the small U-boat fleet, showed a key competition to the British. In the early war, U-boats drowned three British cruisers, shocking the people of both England and Germany. The U-boat campaign was a major reason that public opinion in America turned against Germany and that America entered the War. Despite the huge investment, the German Navy accomplished nothing in return to counter balance the cost for Germany.
The United States was already having financial difficulties and had a very poorly prepared military. Hence the label “America’s Worst Fought War”. The actions carried out by the United States did not carry the intentions to produce good consequences. The bad effects were planned and intended by using the maritime attacks as an excuse to engage into war—the Annex of Canada and Florida. The good of the war does not outweigh the bad done by it.
The United States, at the time of World War II, was facing an economic depression which concerned the American public and President Roosevelt because they knew that America’s involvement with the war was inevitable. Most resources state that “the United States entered World War II largely unprepared” (America and Word War II 610). However, due to the fact that while preparing for the war there was an increase in economic growth, African Americans and women became more involved in industry and the military, and President Roosevelt incorporated several acts and embargos that encouraged Americans to produce more supplies as well as permitted Britain and France to purchase goods from the United States, it can be argued that America was in fact prepared for its entry into World War II. The external threads of continuity, such as economic, social, political, and geographic factors, had a greater impact on the United States preparedness for war, which resulted in the overall success of the Allied Powers.
America joining World War 1 is a huge decision that can affect the lives of millions of people and our country as a whole. There are many things that could happen that we need to consider. Some pros to joining the war could be a better economy, more jobs, and stopping Germany. Some cons of joining the war could be losing money, losing lives, and possible losing the war. Deciding whether to enter the war or not is a difficult decision and the pros and cons must be considered to make a decision.
"He Kept us Out of War" (World War I Quotes). This quote was a democratic slogan stated during the election of 1916 on behalf of President Woodrow Wilson. This slogan makes an attempt to refer to the good leadership qualities and decisions that President Wilson made to keep the United States of America out of the war and that is why he should be elected again to serve as President. Though this made a valid argument to show that Wilson was smart to keep us out of war, many events took place that continued to anger the U.S. which eventually made them declare war on Germany on April 6th, 1917 (World War I). In doing this, they broke their policy of non intervention. The United States held out of the Great War for so long because of economic reasons, their policy of neutrality, and to avoid the morbid trench warfare (America). However, the United Stated eventually entered the war because of Germany sinking several U.S. passenger ships, and the publication of the Zimmerman telegram (World War I).
Congress passed the declaration of war against Germany primarily based on its unrestricted use of U-boats against American ships. My topic is concerning the sinking of the Lusitania. The Lusitania was a British merchant ship that had 200 Americans on board. The Germans sunk the cruiser with submarine warfare on May 7th, 1915, claiming that the ship was carrying munitions. Though the Lusitania was not a weapons-bearing ship, later investigations proved there were a few munitions on board. When the ship sank, a total of 150 of the 1,100 casualties were Americans; thus, this crisis later became war propaganda in America. President Woodrow Wilson became frustrated with the transgression on the Germans’ part and issued them a warning. He claimed that the Germans violated American rights on the high seas, and that the Germans were accountable for their breach of
Indeed, Hitler’s plan to defeat the Allies with U-boats was looking very good. For some unknown reason the Allied ships could not defend against the U-boats. With Hitler in control it looked like the Axis powers were going to drive the Allies out of the Atlantic and win the Battle of the Atlantic. With Hitler taking over most of England, and Great Britain trying to hold the Germans off, the United States decides to send war aid to Britain. The United States gave the British fifty old American destroyers (Von Der Porten 171).
The United States remained neutral in World War One because they saw it in their best interest. At the time the war began, the U.S. industry was struggling. Staying out of the war was a way to boost the industry in America by utilizing trade with both the Ally and Central Powers. The U.S. also had no real reason to join the war. They had close ties with both sides. Some problems, however, would arise that would question the U.S. decision to remain neutral and sway their opinions to one side of the war.
Especially when Wilson, in his speech in 1917 about the sinking, said “I advise that the Congress declare the recent actions of the Imperial German Government to be, in fact, nothing less than war against the Government and people of the United States.” gave the people the impression that this is why America entered the war.
With entering World War 1 the United States knew they had many other countries on their side. This was going to help them out a lot because they will work together and be able to cover more ground and kill more Germans and Austrians. The United States main allies in the war were Britain, France, and Russia.
