The USA Gymnastics sex abuse scandal has been a huge issue in the world in the past couple years. This scandal involves the sexual abuse of female athletes over the past 20 years, in which over 330 individuals have been sexually assaulted. This scandal became public knowledge in September 2016 and ever since then, several women have come forward to testify that they were abused in what seem to be one of the worst sexual abuse scandal in the history of sport. Larry Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics national team osteopathic Doctor, was named in the center of the scandal which he pleaded guilty and was sentenced in January to 40 to 175 years in prison on seven counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. By conducting an internal investigation the team could control the damage and hopefully prevent further damage to a sport riddled with scandals and abusive coaches. The sport is a very tight knit community where rumors and news spread quickly through the ranks. Such a scandal could rock the community and the sport could see parents pulling their sons and daughters out of the sport at an alarming rate should the allegations prove true. There are rules and techniques that they are looking for but it is an opinionated judged sport. But, there are some ways that USA Gymnastics is going to do to help prevent subjective judging and team selection processes that won’t be used to discourage athletes from reporting abuse. They have started by setting up anonymous counseling and tip lines to help protect the identity of a victim. They are also encouraging others to speak up if they feel like they are being abused or been in uncomfortable situations. Most importantly, gold medalists are speaking up which is creating a hope for those whom are worried that it will affect their ability to climb the ranks. Seeing people standing up whom are at the top should help encourage athletes to report abuse. 6. Did USA Gymnastics destroy or alter medical records collected on athletes? USA Gymnastics did not destroy but might have altered medical records collected on athletes. The reason why we think they could have altered medical records is because they most likely withheld information at one point of time. Withholding information is the same thing as altering information. They could have withheld information about someone coming forward about potential abuse from Nassar which is corrupt and a crime. 7.
