Imagine as an American citizen waking up everyday with a ¨president¨ or a group that controls the country by using the army and makes all the decisions by them self, that could happen if we didn't have the constitution. The constitution was signed September 17, 1787 and created the US government and secured our rights. The Constitution uses three things to prevent Tyranny, Federalism, Separation of Powers, and Checks and Balances. Federalism is a type of government where there are two or more entities share the power over a country or region. Federalism has always helped to prevent tyranny from happening in the US. The two entities ruling in the United States are the National or Central Government and the State Government. The Central Government has powers such as regulating trade, declaring war, and to conduct foreign relations. The State Government can hold elections, pass marriage and divorce laws, and establish schools. They also have shared powers like taxing, being able to make and enforce laws, and borrow money (Doc A). Federalism prevents tyranny because the state or national governments can never become too strong because the other has powers too.…show more content…
Separation of Powers splits the different government responsibilities into branches. In the US we have the Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branches of government. The Executive branch is the president and vice president, he enforces the laws. The Legislative branch is Congress, they create the laws. The Judicial branch is the Court System, they can decide if a law is constitutional or not. James Madison says it perfectly ¨Liberty requires that the three great departments of power should be separate and distinct.¨ (Doc B).
