Types of welding and welding processes Welding has been around since the 1800’s with basic processes, like the use of the oxy-acetylene torch. Then the process of arc welding came into play in the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s, when electrical welding became widely popular. Now there are many different kinds of arc welding with materials such as different electrodes, fluxes, and gases. There is some basic equipment that is needed while welding. First and foremost, a welding mask is needed to protect the eyes from the extremely bright light created by the arc. UV light can also come from arcs, so eye protection is needed for this as well. Another necessary piece of safety equipment is gloves. A thick protective specially designed welding glove is used for the hand that is holding the torch, and a thinner glove is optional for the hand that isn’t on the torch as well. Heavy cotton clothing, especially long sleeves and jeans, is necessary as well. The long sleeves and pants will protect the skin from the extremely hot spatter than can fly off everywhere when welding. Leather is preferred if doing a lot of welding at one time. One main category of welding is arc welding. Arc welding uses a current sent from an electrode, through the base metal, and back into the ground clamp on your welder. This arc creates a tiny spot of immense heat that melts the metal around it, thus creating a weld puddle, or the puddle of molten metal. Within arc welding there are MIG, TIG, and stick welding. One type of arc welding is MIG welding. MIG stands for Metal Inert Gas. MIG, however, is formally known as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) (“How to Weld”). The inert gas used in MIG welding is normally Argon, CO2, or CO25. CO25 is a mix of 75% argon ... ... middle of paper ... ...less Steel, Aluminum and Carbon Pipe."
