Welding has been around since the 1800’s with basic processes, like the use of the oxy-acetylene torch. Then the process of arc welding came into play in the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s, when electrical welding became widely popular. Now there are many different kinds of arc welding with materials such as different electrodes, fluxes, and gases. There is some basic equipment that is needed while welding. First and foremost, a welding mask is needed to protect the eyes from the extremely bright light created by the arc. UV light can also come from arcs, so eye protection is needed for this as well. Since the aluminum wire that gets fed through the cord is too soft to be pushed through like the steel wire, either a push-pull gun or a spool gun is required. A spool gun has the spool of wire attached right to the gun so the wire doesn’t travel through the cord. A push-pull gun helps out the wire by pulling the wire being pushed from the welder itself so it doesn’t bundle up in the cord. The advantage the push-pull gun has over the spool gun is size. There is the ability to get in a lot tighter spaces with a push-pull gun than with a spool gun because the push-pull gun is about the same size as a regular MIG gun. TIG welding is the next type of welding. TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas. TIG is formally known as GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) (“Learn how to TIG weld!”). There are three main parts to a TIG welder: the torch, the foot pedal, and the filler rod. The torch houses the Tungsten and the inert gas shield. The foot pedal controls the amperage for better control of the weld, as well as the best amount of penetration into the base metal. Finally, the filler rod is what you dip into the weld to increase the weld puddle
There is a type of welding that utilizes hydrogen, called Atomic Hydrogen Welding. The welding tool is two tungsten steel rods, acting as electrodes, through which passes an arc of electricity. Hydrogen gas is pump through the arc, and the temperature of the arc disassociates the gas into individual molecules, which absorb an incredible amount of heat. When the gas passes through the arc, it reassembles itself, and burns ordinarily, and using oxygen in the air. This is the hottest type of welding process yet; with a flame of over 7232 degrees F. it was invented in 1926, and was used extensively in Germany during WWII.
Friction stir welding is a solid state welding process; this remarkable up-gradation of friction welding was invented in 1991 in The Welding Institute [1]. Figure 1 shows the schematic representation of the Friction Stir Welding process. The process starts with clamping the plates to be welded to a backing plate, so that the plates do not fly away during the welding process. A rotating wear resistant tool is plunged on the interface between the plates to a predetermined depth and moved forward in the interface between the plates to form the weld. The external tool has a probe and shoulder which stirs the material to be joined and forges the surface. FSW comes together with forging and extrusion processes. The probe and shoulder extrudes the material by stirring and the shoulder alone forges the material surface to be joined.
According to Pickwelder, “This type of welding is used in welding wide varieties of metals and alloys such as magnesium, steel, stainless steel, nickel, copper, aluminum, bronze and many other nonferrous metals” (James). MIG can be used with a number of different metals making it very diverse. This is a good quality as it can bond to any metal with the right settings and welding wire. According to JobsiteUS, “A range of material thicknesses can be welded from thin gauge sheet metal right up to heavier structural plates” (Peter Apalais). MIG welding can weld through all different metals and their thicknesses. This is good for production because this process can do both while some processes can only weld thin or thick metal. According to Coastal Media Brand, “Capable for a variety of applications, including – trailer hitches, auto body repair and restoration, farm/ranch equipment, household projects, repairing wheel barrows, bicycles, etc” (Coastalmedia843) The multivariate MIG has so many possibilities that can be used for nearly anything that involves repair work or production. It is good for commercial use and even for your home. This shows the extent that MIG welding can go up to, and the list goes on. The pros to mig welding are that with little practice almost anybody can execute this type of welding. Materials that are thinner can be easily welded and thus less waste is produced and operating costs is much lower compared to other types of welding and there are uninterrupted welds. The cons of this type of weld are that there is a possibility of undue melt-through the outcome and will end up in partial joint penetration and or fusion. Also, this type of weld is well known to leave deposits of contamination and greatly rusty deposits. It also lets out heavy smoke and it will not well through any dirty material and it has complex equipment.
