Saint Leo’s core value of “Excellence” states as follows, “All of us, individually and collectively, work hard to ensure that our students develop the character, learn the skills, and assimilate the knowledge essential to become morally responsible leaders” (Florida Catholic University). Using data effectively and efficiently is the moral responsibility of Saint Leo Alumni for our students and community. In order to be effective and efficient one must be able to recognize different types of data and be able to determine the need and meaning behind the numbers. Before interpreting different types of data, remember that data refers to a group of information that one can analyze. Data can range from a gender ratio to scores of an individualized assessment.
In the education field, one will encounter several forms of data throughout the day. The data that we encounter can be broken into three distinct groups. Information that cannot be sequenced is part of the nominal category of data. This information has no “high” or “low” value. There is not a logical sequence for the data to be categorized. An interesting piece of nominal data that I discovered was male to female ratio. I work for a small facility of only 10 employees and was interested to note that there were 4 females and 6 males. Looking at this data is very important because there is a group of people that can utilize this information in a great capacity than others. This group of people is often referred to as the audience. In the gender example the audience for this information would be potential employees and hiring mangers. These would be two key audience members because they would be able to utilize this information most when making decision. Another way t...

...n, one can understand the practicality and importance of effectively using and deducing data. It is important to understand and interpret different type s of nominal, ordinal, and interval data. Being able to assess the different types of data give one a clear idea of what information is presented and, more importantly, how to competently utilize it. Furthermore, knowing whether the data presented is discrete or continuous will help one to set and meet expectations. In all, having data is imperative however knowing how to utilize the data effectively is invaluable

Numbers can be deceiving and at the same time provide a close analysis of the data which can yield valuable information. As identified in the chart above Thornton Fractional South High School is performing below average as compared to the Illinois State averages for both the ACT and PSAE. However, when broken down by demographics there is another story that becomes abundantly clear. Some of our students are performing well on the state tests while others are fairing very poorly. The White demographic in our building is performing significantly better than either the Black...
The final chapter of this book encourages people to be critical when taking in statistics. Someone taking a critical approach to statistics tries assessing statistics by asking questions and researching the origins of a statistic when that information is not provided. The book ends by encouraging readers to know the limitations of statistics and understand how statistics are
Some assessments are norm- or criterion-referenced, so they are not too difficult to analyze; but some assessment results are ambiguous. It is up to educators to decide what the results mean and what to do with them. Using the data is a crucial part of this whole process. The data collected from these assessments should, “…guide instruction (i.e., determine which skills to teach, help refine and identify which practices are best to teach those skills)” (307). Using information collected from assessment regarding talents, interests, and career ambitions can help to motivate students in academics. Knowing what they’re interested in can help tailor lessons to capture their attention and make the learning more meaningful. I think individualization and making learning meaningful to each student is a very important part of education— something I will strive to do in my teaching
One of these is Social categorization. Based on the name it is very self explanatory, with the social categorization there is the need to divide, categorizing individuals into groups (in and out groups).
Big Data is a term used to refer to extremely large and complex data sets that have grown beyond the ability to manage and analyse them with traditional data processing tools. However, Big Data contains a lot of valuable information which if extracted successfully, it will help a lot for business, scientific research, to predict the upcoming epidemic and even determining traffic conditions in real time. Therefore, these data must be collected, organized, storage, search, sharing in a different way than usual. In this article, invite you and learn about Big Data, methods people use to exploit it and how it helps our life.
The development of knowledge requires a number of processes in order to establish credible data to ensure the validity and appropriateness of how it can be used in the future. For the healthcare industry, this has provided the ability to create and form new types of interventions in order to give adequate care across a of number of fields within the system. Research then, has been an essential part in providing definitive data, either by disproving previous beliefs or confirming newly found data and methods. Moreover, research in itself contains its own process with a methodological approach. Of the notable methods, quantitative research is often used for its systemic approach (Polit & Beck, 2006). Thus, the use of the scientific method is used, which also utilizes the use of numerical data (Polit & Beck). Here, researches make use of creating surveys, scales, or placing a numerical value on it subjects (Polit & Beck). In the end the resulting data is neutral and statistical. However, like all things its approach is not perfect, yet, it has the ability to yield valuable data.
However on the other hand, for all advantages; there are disadvantages. In some instances when people utilize and manipulate data, they may knowingly falsify data so that it may adhere to ones beliefs or theories. In addition there are people who may deliberately tamper with information as well. When collecting information, there must be neutrality when assessing and collecting data. In addition, professional competence and integrity must be superior and finally, all research subjects or respondents must be safeguarded from potential harm and sabotage.
Analytical social styles include people who take the path of a systematic approach. They spend a large amount of time researching data
You begin by choosing in the data, interpret it into your own terms, clarify it to yourself, and then draw conclusions. It is not safe, because it all happens extremely quickly in your head, and you're probably not aware that you are just selecting a few of the data. Nobody else sees your thought processes, or knows what stages you've gone through to reach your conclusions. All of the data see is the action. It can help me to comprehend how and why I believe as I do about an issue.
This chapter taught me the importance of understanding statistical data and how to evaluate it with common sense. Almost everyday we are subjected to statistical data in newspapers and on TV. My usual reaction was to accept those statistics as being valid. Which I think is a fair assessment for most people. However, reading this chapter opens my eyes to the fact that statistical data can be very misleading. It shows how data can be skewed to support a certain group’s agenda. Although most statistical data presented may not seem to affect us personally in our daily lives, it can however have an impact. For example, statistics can influence the way people vote on certain issues.
Demographically we can segment the market into groups based on age, gender, family- size, income, family life cycle and occupation.

Big data is a concept that has been misunderstood therefore I will be writing this paper with the intentions of thoroughly discussing this technological concept and all its dimensions with regard to what constitutes big data and how the term came about. The rapid innovations in Information Technology have brought about the realisation of big data. The concept of big data is complex and has different connotations but I intend to clarify its functions. Big data refers to the concept of a collection of large and complex amounts of data that are found extremely difficult to notate or even process by most on-hand devices and database technologies.

Researchers, professionals and others use statistics to prove their claims or findings. Even though statistics are not an absolute fact because the conclusion is mostly drawn from a sample group – representative of a specific population subjected to the research, it is commonly used as the basis of decision making or alternating choices in daily living, studies, works, scientific research, politics and other planning. The inventor of a documentary film called “An inconvenient truth”, Mr. Al Gore, for instance, in his campaign to educate people about the climate change, used statistics to alert people that everyone on earth is polluting the environment and should participate in solving the problem. He collected data from many different countries with an in...
