Vincent Van Gogh was born in 1853. He would grow to be one of the greatest artists of his era. Van Gogh utilized a variety of colors on the spectrum, giving his paintings life. He often used the art style of impressionists in that his paintings are depicted as he sees fit, and not how they are naturally viewed (Cliff). His paintings consisted of complex brush strokes that would vary in the amounts of paint used. He used colors in order to push emotion onto the audience through contrasting colors and his works often reflected his own mood and surroundings. Van Gogh continued to use impressionism until he mastered the use of color techniques and expressing emotion in order to bring life to his paintings, as shown in The Sower and The Night Café. The Night Café was created in 1888, when Van Gogh stayed at the Café de la Gare (Wikipedia). This stay was not Van Gogh’s first encounter with this atmosphere; in fact he was quite familiar with brothels and bars (Cliff). This very atmosphere served as his inspiration. He took a strong interest in the livelihoods of the “night prowlers that ‘had no money to pay for lodging, or are too drunk to be taken in’. They are travelers without a home, which is not exactly what Van Gogh experienced, yet he could fully relate to their feelings. The painting is a depiction of the inside of the café, which took Van Gogh three days and three nights to complete (Harding). Upon its completion, Van Gogh was unimpressed with his artistic abilities and called it his worst painting yet (Gogh). The Café de la Gare was at the time operated by Michel Ginoux, which was given the painting in order to pay for his stay. Van Gogh often visited brothels and disreputable drinking establishments. Vincent Van Gogh is one of the world’s greatest and most well-known artists, but when he was alive he considered himself to be a complete failure. It was not until after he died that Van Gogh’s paintings received the recognition they deserved. Today he is thought to be the second best Dutch artist, after Rembrandt. Born in 1853, he was one of the biggest artistic influences of the 19th century. Vincent Van Gogh created a new era of art, he learned to use art to escape his mental illness, and he still continues to inspire artists over 100 years later.

Vincent Willem van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands on March 30, 1853. He was born into a middle class family that sometimes struggled financially. His grandfather was a famous preacher and his father was a minister so religion was pretty important within his family. The other passion within the family was art. His mother was an artist and three of his uncles and later his brother were art dealers. He got his first job at age 15, at his uncle’s art dealership. The fact that Vincent’s family was struggling at this time gave him the responsibility to leave school and go to work. Despite his family 's misfortune, van Gogh was fluent in 4 languages and his concern with art and religion kept growing. At the age of 20, he was transferred to the Goupil Gallery in London. It was there that he fell in love with art and English culture. He visited galleries in his spare time and in many aspects increased his understanding as a whole. In this period of time he started to fall in love with a woman named Eugenie Loyer. Vincent was prepared to ask her to marry him, but Eugenie didn’t feel the same as he did so she rejected the proposal and this caused van Gogh to suffer a mental breakdown. In this time he turned to God and threw away all unnecessary possessions except for the bible. He was fired from the Gallery for telling the customers “not to buy the worthless art.” Vincent then started teaching at a Methodist school and preached on the side a little. This was the first time in his life where he started to contemplate becoming a minister. He studied for a year planing to take the entrance exam to become a minister at the School of Theology in Amsterdam. He was denied entrance after refusing to take the Latin exam calling it a “de...
The life span of 37 years saw Vincent Willem van Gogh (Vincent) in creating beautiful works he dearly loved. Painting was an avenue, which allowed him to express his inner thoughts or vent his struggles. My decision to research on Vincent’s painting, Starry Night (1889) came with the inspiration from Don Mclean’s Song, Starry Starry Night where his lyrics spoke about Vincent’s life that further intrigued me in writing this paper.
My first observation of this painting is the bright pastel colors that are used that are far different from the dark, dull, flat colors used in our first image. The lines used in this piece of art differ from that of “The Third of May” as they are communicative lines rather than directional lines. Communicative lines suggest feelings and emotions to the viewer. The lines in Van Gogh’s artwork are mostly vertical lines that imply a sense of uneasiness was taking place in that bedroom. By using vertical lines the artist communicated certain emotions he was feeling at the time he painted
Vincent van Gogh is considered one of the greatest dutch painters after Rembrandt. Even though he remained poor and virtually unknown throughout his life, just one of his paintings today in auction(the famous Starry Night) is worth over 80 million dollars in auction. In just over a decade Vincent created approximately 2100 paintings, including 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. All of his paintings consist of highly expressive and dramatic brush work which contributed to the inspiration of modern art today. Although is paintings are sold for millions of dollars all over the world today, he only sold one painting in his life time and became famous after his suicide at age 37. His suicide was after years of his
Painted by Vincent Van Gogh during a final burst of activity in Auvers before his suicide in July, Houses at Auvers features many of the characteristic elements typical of Van Gogh; the experimentation with color, texture, and thick brush strokes. This painting depicts the view and landscape in early summer, highlighting the patchwork of houses and the rolling greenery. Van Gogh’s unique, thick brush strokes lead the eyes through the painting, create texture and patterns and also highlight and shadow objects in the early summer sun, while his experimentation with color creates contrast and a bright, vibrant image.
Vincent Van Gogh, a post-impressionist painter, was born March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands and died July 29, 1890. His father was a minister, his mother was an artist, he had three sisters and two younger brothers. He seemed to be close to his brother, Theo. He had to move out when he was 15 because his family was poor, he had to get a job and could no longer go to school. He never got married because he always seemed to be drawn to women in trouble, thinking he could help them but he couldn’t. (Editors, 2017)

Vincent Van Gogh never gave up his style and insight in his early work compared to his later work. I will discuss the comparison of the Potato Eaters and Starry Night and even though there are obvious differences, the core of his passion and eccentricities can be seen.
One of the most famous Post-Impressionists was the Dutch artist, Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh believed that art was a form of expression. Painting was an emotional and spiritual experience for him. He painted not only how he interpreted his surroundings, but his sensations and feelings on his subjects. One of his most famous paintings, Starry Night, is a perfect representation of this Post-Impressionistic style of painting.
Van Gogh was a post-impressionist painter, this particular piece was painted at a mental institution near Arles, France using oil on canvas. During this time, Van Gogh was inspired by the Chaine des Alpilles, a small
Vincent Van Gogh created The Sower, a 12 3⁄5˝ × 15 3⁄4 Oil on canvas, in 1888. The subject of The Sower is a man working in a field all day all alone, in the hot overbearing sun, who is far from home. Gogh uses the visual elements and principles of design listed below to describe a lonely soul. The painting illustrates how long and hard a day or life can be and depicts a home that is far away. The colors of the field represent the joy the sower has in his work.
Vincent Van Gogh’s piece titled Starry Night, represents the artist’s insanity and isolation from the outside world. Van Gogh painted the view that was seen from the room, mixed with the emotions he felt inside. Starry Night is an oil painting on canvas and is two dimensional. The painting is found in the Museum of Modern Art located in New York. The variety of elements and principles of art, help to bring the painting to life, and help viewers understand what the art could represent.
In this essay will be talking about and comparing between the traditional painting Starry night by Vincent Van Gogh and the digital movie poster for Midnight in Paris designed by the company Cardinal Communications USA. Starry Night is an artwork that was painted in 1889 in an asylum at Saint-Remy-de-Provience, France while the Midnight in Paris poster is digitally made somewhere in the USA by someone in that company sometime in 2010. While both these artworks are very different, they have some similarities.
