Health is defined as the state of being free from illness or injury. However, health focuses on more than just the physical being. Health has six important components, such as the following: environmental, social, physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental. With this being said, to attain health in its totality, it is important to maintain a balance in all aspects of health. However, going through daily life experiences can affect us human beings in all ways, or more in one way than the other.
Health is described as “the general condition of the body or mind, especially in terms of the presence or absence of illness or impairments.” Health can also be defined as “the overall condition of something in terms of soundness, vitality and proper functioning” (Oxford, 263). From the definitions of health given, one can either be in good health or in unhealthy.
As defined in the World Health Organization’s constitution (2006), health is the state of absolute well-being in the physical, mental, and social aspects and not merely the absence of disease or frailty. The definition of health adapted by most scholars encompasses all the dimensions of a person’s well-being, not only focusing on physical health. It also emphasizes that health does not equate to not having any sickness.
Health is described as physical and mental well-being and freedom from disease, pain or defect. However, such descriptions only superficially define the actual meaning of health. There may be many occasions when individuals are not necessarily ill or in pain but may be overweight, stressed or emotionally unstable. Health is a quality of life involving dynamic interaction and interdependence among the individual’s physical state, their mental and emotional reactions, and the social context in which the individual exists. First, and foremost, I believe income and wealth are the most important factors in promoting good health. Although wealth is relative from one to person to the next, its’ value is perceptible in its purchase of “freedom” in the form of economic security. Having wealth enables one to secure affordable housing, likely in a safe environment with quality schools nearby. Although having wealth does not automatically guarantee happiness, it provides the financial resource that reduces the mental and physical stress of not having enough money to purchase the basic necessities of food and shelter. The presence of poverty leads to health care inequities, poor education and ecological surroundings. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that genes, health behaviors and biology account only 25% of an individual’s health while 75% of health is affected by social determinants such as access to health care, physical environment (housing quality) and job opportunities (CDC, 2013). Income and wealth also enable persons to become educated, which is also a predictor of good health.

Good health is a privilege that can be altered or taken away at any instant. Good health comes with responsibility. Responsibility requires time, knowledge, maturity, and determination. Responsibility is defined as the social force that binds you to your obligations and the courses of action demanded by that force (Princeton University, 2003). Moral questions arise when health and responsibility come together: How much does a person value his or her health? Do they have a desire to live? If the answer to both of these questions is no, then that person creates a greater risk in putting their health in jeopardy. If the answer is yes, then the individual must take advantage of the tools provided to them to sustain good health. The modern world has provided literature, internet sources, gyms, health food stores, and most importantly the men of wisdom; physicians.
What is a Health Triangle? A Health Triangle is a way to show how to balance your three elements health: physical, emotional, and social. Physical is about the body, mental/emotional is about your feeling, and social is about communication with others. Each of them is dear and important to our health and if one of the element has more than the other or less, the whole triangle is unbalanced. That could lead to major changes in a person’s life and major risks on their health. I believe it is very hard as a teen to have balance of our three elements, but there is a chance that teens too could balance their health triangle. I have a hard time balancing the health triangle, but I know I can improve and fix my mistakes through my actions.
The health triangle is a triangle that has 3 different aspect of your everyday life. The most commonly known factor is physical health. Physical health is the body’s ability to function depending on the state of your body and how it is treated. This includes exercise, nutritions, rest, and weight managements. The remaining two factors is known as emotional/mental and social. Although it is not considered by many people, the two factors is just as important as much physical health. Mental health deals with how we think, feel, and handle or react to situations. Social health deals with how we deal with the people within your environment. By blending all sides of the triangle, you can achieve maximum health to your life. But in other words, if you lack a side, it could affect the other 2 sides as well.
