6:15 AM. Wake up. Twitter. Brushes teeth. Gets dressed. Twitter. Grabs keys. Gets to school. Twitter. Think about it. How many times a day do you check your Twitter account? Why is it so hard for some people to resist this form of social interaction? Why is it that it seems easier to make connections with others through this site, than it is in a situation where actual face-to-face interaction is involved? There are so many questions, yet not many answers. With 313 million active users, Twitter has not only become a site for mass communication, but has also served as an outlet of mass media, providing news as well as an opportunity for others to express their feelings on any topic of their preference (Twitter, 2016). This is the exact thoughts that usually go through their head at some point in time, at least from personal experience. The idea of a world where nothing is inaccessible, and where free speech is actually free, is rare, therefore, it excites us. However, we tend to take the use of Twitter to the extreme. The hackneyed saying that too much of anything is not good for you definitely proves relevant when it comes to excessive use of any social media site for that matter. It is evident that our society, especially this generation, abuses Twitter. Whether it is as simple as using the site too many times in a day, or abuse in the sense that it is being tarnished by harsh misuse, it is evident that there remains a prevalent issue. As a community, we all acknowledge that technology has taken over our social lives. Nownwhether you believe that it has enhanced or deteriorated communication is subjective, however, means to restrain from actually using sites like Twitter have been very limited. According to Carr (2008) in reference to Google, the fact that our generation has learned to rely and spend most of our time on the internet has its pros and cons. Yes, depending on who you follow, Twitter can expand your knowledge, but simultaneously it may be slowing down our ability to process information. The quote “I have almost totally lost the ability to read and absorb a longish article on the web or in print” remains relevant in this sense as well (Carr, 2008). Due to Twitter’s 140 character limit, the information that we are receiving is very brief and condensed.
