After years of being on the rise, Twitter has a surprising history. In this paper I will explain how Twitter started appealing to people. Why people even use it and most importantly how does it influence American culture.
It all started with a man named Jack Dorsey. Who gained an interest in computers at a young age.He then began programming in high school. At the age of only fifteen Dorsey conceived a book called “Dispatch Software” which was used to help taxi drivers keep in contact with one another. This shows his young genius showing already. The fact he even thought of this is pure genius in itself. Twitter was thought of so people could notify their friends of what they were doing currently. It also lets you instant message your friends. But smart phones were in their beginning years when Twitter was created. Twitter also had many other names until they chose the original. The names were Smssy, Twitch, and unfortunately Friendstalker which makes sense to a certain extent. But none of these are as appealing as Twitter.
Next are probably the most asked questions the public might ask about Twitter. The first is how Twitter became so popular. Some of the top reasons for that is the oh so amazing hash tag, and the fact you can post something and all your followers know exactly what you are doing. The hashtags main use is to highlight keywords or the main topic of the tweet, but mainly used to define groups. In social media anything immediately following the hash tag can be turned into a searchable term, which is activated when clicked on. According to Twitter in 2011 ten percent of tweets contained a hash tag. But the hash tag just happened to pop up by a man named Chris Messina. Mr. Messina used to work for Google as the design...

... the things you could’ve done in such time. Instead of seeing what your friends are doing maybe enjoy quality time with them in the world and not the technological one.
In conclusion Twitter has a lot of dramatic history such as the hash tag wasn’t really a thing the company wanted to start which is pretty embarrassing considering how many people use it. But it can be a wonderful piece of entertainment in a person’s life. It provides you with the latest updates on news shows you what is currently trending and provides you with an easy retreat from the world. But is this really how you would like to spend your free time. On a phone just scrolling through the news feed to see whatever catches your eye, wow your cool. Twitter may seem to benefit you but it’s really just hurting billions of Americans who are constantly using it for the reason it wasn’t even made for.
Whether walking down the street, at a party, or even looking through the App Store, chances are the name "Twitter ' has stood out. Twitter is a social media site that allows it 's users to post news updates in real time, socialize with other users, or even just to view the most recent events going on in the world. It can be used as a modern-day newspaper, a text-messaging service, or even a blog. In David Carr 's article, "Why Twitter Will Endure", the main topic of discussion is how long this utility would last among us. In his article, Carr clearly and eloquently expressed his views on why Twitter will endure, through the use of his own ethos and logos.
Twitter is an online social networking service that has grown to a global scale. In 2006, it was created for people to be able to share short blurbs of information with each other, and it has done its job quite well. However, like most technologies, there comes consequences, good and bad, that many didn’t intend, or expect, to happen. Twitter has greatly affected the world, and society as a whole, as it affects everything from the news to even how we think.
“Using the Twitter advanced search, we can look at all the tweets in Boston in real-time... We’re not interested in just everyday messages that people put up--but when people start saying ‘What’s that smoke coming from the Hancock Tower’ or ‘Why is everybody running around Copley Place’ or something?... If two or three things come in--patterns, trends--something we should be paying attention to” (Youtube).
Within the last two decades, our social media has rapidly developed and it becomes one of the most influent types of social communication. Though its original purpose is to be a convenient way to converse distantly, it becomes multi-tasked in recent years which some notable Internet corporations such as Facebook, Tweeter create new applications that expand its purpose from talking only. In a way, it renovates the idea of entertainment.
This is because the effects of the medium on a personal and social scale as the extension of us can result from a new scale that is introduced into our lives by the extension of ourselves and by any kind of new technology (McLuhan, 1964, p. 7). In this case, the medium could be twitter. Created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams, twitter has proven to be the largest source of breaking news and social networking site. Since its beginnings, twitter is the medium
Social media is a revolution, which we are currently experiencing. It has changed the way people communicate and interact with one another, and opens up many more avenues to share news, information, and just general chit chat. Social media is relatively quiet young, but is here to stay for the foreseeable future. We are now at a point where online, we can share, read and react to lots of individual information being posted on microblogging websites, such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Tumblr and more. Twitter in particular has been widely embraced, and will centre most of the discussion.

While the company has been focusing way much on its features and products to attract people, they failed to pay the right amount of attention to the problems they are facing at the moment. Jack Dorsey’s priority wasn’t to make revenue, and that was a major point of conflict regarding the company’s success. Twitter faced and is still facing many problems and complications that left the company behind. Among these problems are revenue growth, user growth, low barriers to entry, business focus and a poor marketing strategy. Nowadays, most companies tend to think of engagement as being the essence of a successful business. As Umair Haque stated in his Harvard Business Review, “The business of most businesses is interaction”. Unfortunately for Twitter,
Forbes estimated that in 2011, Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg were worth an estimated 50 billion dollars as a result of its growing popularity. It went from a social network just for Harvard Student to a worldwide phenomenon. Twitter as well has famous celebrities and personalities who are followed by millions. Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry are the top 3 most followed people on Twitter, with over 14 million people following them and updated on their every single move. Besides the elite list of celebrities and famous companies such as Google or The New York Times using social media sites as an outlet to gain customers, one of the main reasons it is so successful is its worldwide and global appeal. People from first and third world countries are aware of it, and statistics show that one in every nine people on Earth is on Facebook, and Twitter is adding up to 500,000 users each day. Search engine giant Google, perhaps the most famous name on the internet has started their own social networking experiment, Google+, which experts have predicted will also become a powerhouse.
...the world to see. Though this may be great and all, it doesn’t equal out to the damage is does to people’s lives. There are so many bad people in this world; unfortunately they ruin social media by causing unwanted drama, and bullying. Without social media, we wouldn’t have to constantly check on there to make sure nobody was saying anything bad about that, or nobody was talking about this, and even to make sure nobody was talking bad about you.
Twitter lack monitoring so you can find and see some bad comments and some impolite words and this will affect our youth. lately it has become a rich land for rumours and exaggeration in conveying news. Also bad and impolite discussion may harm our young people. People who use twitter always insist on their opinion and don’t accept others and fifth to prove that their opinion is true, and they try to impose their ideas on others. Sometimes twitter may isolate young people away from their families and communities, and the youth all the time are away from families and communities participation.

Social media has become a major epidemic in today’s society. According to millions of people have signed up on social media websites, allowing their basic information to be shared with the world wide web. Two of the biggest social media websites today are Facebook and Twitter. The new generation tends to use Twitter over Facebook, the older generation prefer Facebook over Twitter. Though Facebook and Twitter serve the same purpose and have many similarities, they both differ in many ways.
...e to get information more quickly. I was having an issue with my cable box and rather than calling up Time Warner and being on hold, I was able to tweet their support handle and get an answer and solution within minutes. I believe that the key to safe and secure social media begins with proper use. Illegal and highly discouraged activities should not be tolerated and consequences should be mandatory. In terms of social media use in teens and young adults, it is important for parents to teach their children what acceptable use of computers and social media is so that they can understand the potential danger and all minors should be monitored while using the Internet to ensure safe usage is being followed. Regardless of age, all users of social media should think twice before clicking the post button about what unintended consequences that post could have.
Twitter described as the “SMS of the internet” is another online social network created in 2006 by Evan Williams, Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass and Biz Stone. Twitter is a social network and micro-blogging service that enables users to send and read “tweets”, limited to the use of 140 characters. It is mainly used to communicate with other members of similar interests whether they know each other and to follow updates from celebrities. Mark D. Bowles comments:
