In week three, our professor a question in regards to Turner’s thesis asked a question of me. The question that was posed to me was this, “which groups did he (Turner) exclude and why should they be included if we are to provide a balanced accounting”? After going back and reading the thesis again to make sure I had not miss anything, I still felt that Turner was very biased in his thinking. I gave my honest feedback on who I felt was left out of the thesis and was going to leave it at that, however I thought, before I submit let me see what other historians are saying about this thesis and Turner in the field of history. Turner pointed out several key areas in his thesis that he indicated were absolutes do to the frontier. The first of these was “composite nationality” , which by definition according to Turner’s understanding was, “he (Turner) saw the Native American as a line of savagery…Assimilation could not, according to logic, cope with the presence of the Native American whose customs, were too alien, too different, to become merged into the American self. This implies that the Native American had no other choice than to give in to the demands of the American government or face the consequences if the failed to comply. Hine and Faragher show that the Native American Indian was forced from their homes more than once during the early part of the 19th century because of “manifest destiny”. Those in the United States government who enforced these rules demanded that the country be turned over to the Americans without question because of their supposed superiority over them. David Nichols points out in his article. Civilization Over Savage: Frederick Jackson Turner and The Indian, that Turner’s reference’s the Indians as “public domain” and the disposition of that them by the first frontier. The conclusions that the Native American Indians were nothing more than public domain that needed to be done away with makes me question his bias towards the American Indians as …show more content…
However, it is relevant that we understand the ripple effect that Turner’s thesis had on the world. Soon to be President had already written three of the fourteen four volumes of Winning the West, prior to reading the pamphlet. The concern I see that effects our society is that Turner was able through a speech able to not on influence but encourage Roosevelt to continue to write more in regards to Winning the Race in the West. The impact of Turner’s ideas and Roosevelt’s rise to presidency are a great indication of how significant the thesis was through the “frontiers” which included the Chinese Boxer Rebellion and the Philippine-American War. During both of these engagements, American soldiers were accused and found guilty of brutally beating, killing and even raping women and men in both regions. The tolerance of “manifest destiny” was still alive and well as Roosevelt then Governor of the Philippines would soon take over as President of the United States in 1904. To many of the English colonists, any land that was granted to them in a charter by the English Crown was theirs’, with no consideration for the natives that had already owned the land. This belittlement of Indians caused great problems for the English later on, for the natives did not care about what the Crown granted the colonists for it was not theirs’ to grant in the first place. The theory of European superiority over the Native Americans caused for any differences in the way the cultures interacted, as well as amazing social unrest between the two cultures.
The other author to provide readers with a different historical perspective is Daniel Richter. Richter’s book Facing East from Indian Country allows readers to see the story of coming to America from the Native American perspective. An interesting point that Richter makes in his book is “Perhaps the strangest lesson of all was that in the new nation whites were the ones entitled to be called “Americans” Indians bizarrely became something else” . This is a report on the book Fires of Jubilee: Nat Turner's Fierce Rebellion, written by Stephen B. Oates. The story is about a slave revolt that happened in 1831 and the person who led it, Nat Turner. It tells of his life, the area and time in which he lived, and of the bloody revolt as well as the bloodier repercussions after it was suppressed.
Turner fails to realize the extent to which Native Americans existed in the ‘Wilderness’ of the Americas before the frontier began to advance. This particular document highlights Richard Pratt’s ideas and attitudes towards Native Americans. Essentially Pratt believed that keeping Natives on reservations is not doing them any good when it comes to assimilating them into American culture, and the only way to properly do so is to fully submerge them. When it all comes down to it, one of the greatest intellectual battles U.S. history was the legendary disagreement between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. This intellectual debate sparked the interest of the Northerners as well as the racist whites that occupied the south. This debate was simply about how the blacks, who just gained freedom from slavery, should exist in America with the white majority. Even though Washington and DuBois stood on opposite sides of the fence they both agreed on one thing, that it was a time for a change in the treatment of African Americans. I chose his topic to write about because I strongly agree with both of the men’s ideas but there is some things about their views that I don’t agree with. Their ideas and views are the things that will be addressed in this essay.
During the process of reading this compilation of works, Portrait of America, many different point of views were aired. The opinion or attitude on the subject was too tainted. The authors were very biased to their perception of the "story". This book could have been much more beneficial if the facts would have stayed to the straight and narrow. Only the detrimental facts needed to be applied to these chapters. For a history class, as broad as this, this book opened too many doors that could not be explained in as much detail as would be liked. Many of the authors enjoyed mentioning the most scandalous moments of the people's lives then dropped the fact without much support or follow through as to what happened to cause or end these events. Brief summaries only tease the mind, and with the course load of most students, there is hardly extra time to investigate the matter further in detail. For a class such as History 152, biographies and/or documentary style books are more worth the while of the student. For instance make a list of a selection of novels that could be read for the class, so that every student can then explore in depth what that student thinks is interesting. Although the book was teasing in nature the chapters did flow well and were easy to read. The procession of the chapters had wonderful transition as to not loose the student. While proceeding through this book there were several different reoccurring topics that appeared. This paper will discuss these two reoccurring topics: the civil rights movement and former presidents.
Turner’s thesis was to a wide extent based on this belief. Turners tried to convince people that American uniqueness is as a result of the constant contact with an open frontier for about 300 years. Turner’s conclusion significantly builds up on the American exceptionalism or uniqueness. Towards the development of the United States of America there has always been a question of the placement of the Native Americans in society. Throughout time, the Natives have been treated differently like an individual nation granted free by the U.S. as equal U.S. citizens, yet not treated as equal. In 1783 when the U.S. gained their independence from Great Britain not only did they gain land from the Appalachian Mountains but conflict over the Indian policy and what their choice was to do with them and their land was in effect. All the way from the first presidents of the U.S. to later in the late 19th century the treatment of the Natives has always been changing. The Native Americans have always been treated like different beings, or savages, and have always been tricked to signing false treaties accompanying the loss of their homes and even death happened amongst tribes. In the period of the late 19th century, The U.S. government was becoming more and more unbeatable making the Natives move by force and sign false treaties. This did not account for the seizing of land the government imposed at any given time (Boxer 2009).

Nat Turner led the largest slave revolt in history. The organization was one of the bloodiest slave rebellions before the civil war. This was the rebellion that served to change the course of American history. Nat Turner led a life by helping other slaves overcome suffrage during the 1800s by starting a rebellion between them and their slave masters. He also had a large religious following, which went on to inspire some of the greatest African American activist in history like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. While he was a slave, he showed others how the divisions of blacks and whites shouldn’t be tolerated in this world. Nat Turner was living through god and justifying his actions as an act of god. And felt like his job was to be the punisher of evil on earth sent from god.
This idea justified the stealing of land from the native people and unfair practices of expansion. As Americans turned overseas for expansion, they came up with a different defense: the white man’s burden. The theory of the white man’s burden argued that the white, civilized men of the world have a moral obligation to rule non-white, uncivilized men through colonization. This theory was popularized when the western frontier was completely settled and Americans were looking for more land and opportunity and it stressed the superiority of the Anglo-Saxon race as proof for its existence (Document B). One of the first examples of white man’s burdens use as a justification was during the refusal of U.S. to allow the Philippines to become independent. The U.S. government had promised the Filipinos their freedom after the Spanish American War, but eventually refused it based on the idea that they were not civilized enough to rule themselves. Not limited to acquired territories, the white man’s burden to Teddy Roosevelt could be used to interfere in any sovereign government if he deemed it inefficient or indecent (Document F). Imagine a historian, author of an award-winning dissertation and several books. He is an experienced lecturer and respected scholar; he is at the forefront of his field. His research methodology sets the bar for other academicians. He is so highly esteemed, in fact, that an article he has prepared is to be presented to and discussed by the United States’ oldest and largest society of professional historians. These are precisely the circumstances in which Ulrich B. Phillips wrote his 1928 essay, “The Central Theme of Southern History.” In this treatise he set forth a thesis which on its face is not revolutionary: that the cause behind which the South stood unified was not slavery, as such, but white supremacy. Over the course of fourteen elegantly written pages, Phillips advances his thesis with evidence from a variety of primary sources gleaned from his years of research. All of his reasoning and experience add weight to his distillation of Southern history into this one fairly simple idea, an idea so deceptively simple that it invites further study.
When Europeans crossed the sea to reach North America, they came with set ideas of who truly had control of the land, and who neither had nor deserved it. Those fitting the latter classification were the Native Americans, the indigenous population of North America. On arrival, the settlers began a decades long phenomenon I refer to as geographic xenophobia. In this phenomenon, instead of race or ethnicity and the primal urge to stay within their established group, it is the geographic composition of the group. Native Americans were not murdered, driven off their land, romanticized, forcefully assimilated, artificially bound, bred White, and otherwise eliminated as Indians but as the rightful landowners and occupants (Wolfe). The European settlers came over knowing that Native Americans existed. However, they expected complacency in removing them from their land under the guise that it was rightfully, as established by god, theirs (Thornton).
