What could a bartender with a disturbing past from a small town perhaps have in common with an affluent sports writer that lives a “great” life in a huge city? A lot actually. Billy Wiles is a young man who lives an average life in Napa County as a Bartender in the thriller Velocity. In a parallel life, Mitch Albom is a well off columnist for the Detroit Free Press in the heart riveting novel, Tuesdays with Morrie. Even though their lives are both boringly average, it is not the only similarity they share. Billy and Mitch are both bound by life changing events that will not only change their perspectives but also their views on anything and everything to come.

In the beginning of the book, Billy could be described as ordinary guy, which was about to change. One day after he finished a work shift, his life changed forever. Challenged with the decision to part take in a series of many murders, Billy felt lost, abandoned, and scared as he searched for any clue on what to do. He realized that a psychotic killer wanted Billy to be in his “performance” or work of art as the unknown killer puts it. Billy has to go through a series of traumatic events. He was first asked “If you don’t take this not to the police... I will kill a lovely blond schoolteacher... If you do... I will instead kill and elderly woman active in charity work. You have six hours to decide. the choice is yours” (Koontz 56). By not taking the decision seriously, he later found out that a blonde school teacher was murdered near his city. Now feeling all the weight of the world on his shoulders, he finally took the “artist” seriously. He was then faced with the decision of a mother with children or a single, lonely man to be murdered. Not knowing what to do again, the “single, lonely man” which happened to be his so called “brother,” was killed. Realizing the severity of the situation, Billy then decided to play the game. Billy changed from a careless guy to a crazed man within 24 hours. Trying hard to protect himself and the only person he cared about would keep him up day and night. The psychopath not only changed Billy on the outside, but he changed him more on the inside. From these encounters with the killer, Billy became tough, observant, and most of all: courageous. After Billy murdered both of the deranged killers, he focused on what really mattered in life; his fiancé.
