The Tree-Kangaroo The endangered animal I chose was the tree kangaroo. It has similarities and differences to other kangaroos. The reproduction and pregnancy are about the same like the Joey and pouch. What is very different is the appearance of them and what they do. They also live in very different habitats than an average kangaroo. Another thing that is the same is what they eat. Being in different habitats they still eat about the same thing. Tree kangaroos live in mountainous cloud forests. The trees there are really tall and the elevation is up in the thousands.They spend most of their lives living in trees. Everyday tree kangaroos die from the main threat of hunting. Tree kangaroos are hunted by both humans and predators of the jungle. Now there are very little left, now there are about 15 species. Most of the tree kangaroos live on the island of Papua New Guinea. There is also a little bit that live nearby on Queen Island. Tree kangaroos severely suffer the loss of habitat from logging. They need trees to live in and sometimes for food. That is their home, where they spend most of their life, and it is ripped away like many other animals. The numbers of tree kangaroos have been dropping for over 30 years. In those 30 years the numbers have actually decreased 80 percent. That means only 20 percent of what there used to be is left of them. Of that 20 percent about 10 percent live in zoos or animal sanctuaries. In the zoos and animal sanctuaries they can live up to 20 years. No one is sure how long they live in the wild, but it is guessed about 10 years or less. Male tree kangaroos will interact and reproduce with many different females. Tree kangaroos only give birth to one offspring each year if breeding is good. They are pregnant a lot shorter than humans are. They are only pregnant for a total of 44 long but short days. A baby tree kangaroo is called a Joey, this is the same for other kangaroos as well. After being born the Joey must stay in the pouch for an additional 10 months. Finally after one year the Joey is completely weaned from its mother.
