By the sound of the definition from the dictionary, transition seems to be a simple, easy process. But in reality, transition is actually a messy, complicated, emotional process. This rings true the most for adolescents who are developing. According to David Pollock: Each transition changes something in our lives. Some transitions are normal and progressive – we accept them […] Sometimes these life transitions include physical moves from one place to another, such as when a young person goes off to university in another state. This group of people is known as Cross-Cultural Kids, but more specifically, Third Culture Kids (TCKs). There has been a lot of globalization and technological improvement throughout the years. Globalization and technological improvement have eased “travel in today’s world” and “converged to create an unprecedented number of children being raised overseas” (). According to Pollock and Van Reken (2001): A Third Culture Kid (TCK) is a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents’ culture. The TCK frequently builds relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership in any. A transition can mean a lot of things. One of the more known transitions is the boy becoming a man idea. One example I thought of that expressed this well was the one I read in “Proofs” by Richard Rodriguez, about the young boys who risked their lives to come across the border. Rodriguez stated, “You are a boy from a Mexican Village. You have come into the country on your knee with your head down. You are a man” (34). This is just one example, but there are all kinds of transitions an individual goes through in their life. One transition can be as simple as getting older and maturing. Erik Erikson had many ideas about this period, and he focuses on the term identity diffusion. Rebecca Fraser-Thill describes this when she writes: “Identity diffusion is one step in the process of finding a sense of self. It refers to a period when an individual does not have an established identity, nor is actively searching for one. In other words, it's a time when a person's identity remains unresolved, yet there is no identity crisis (called an identity moratorium).” (Fraser-Thill, 2011) Erikson was able to carefully acknowledge the intrinsic components of the concept of identity diffusion. During adolescence, teens are engaged in forming their position in society and in developing social connections with their peers. Teens may begin to feel confused or insecure about themselves and how they fit in to society. Teens may experiment with different roles, activities and behaviors when they seek to establish a sense of self. According to Erikson, this is important process in forming a strong identity and developing a sense of direction in life.
Adulthood has often been associated with independence. It serves as a turning point in life where one has to take responsibility for oneself and no longer being dependent on his or her family. Early adulthood, usually begins from late teens or early twenties and will last until the thirties (Santrock, 2013). Early adulthood revolves around changes and exploration while middle and late adulthood are more of stability. The transition from adolescence and adulthood differs among every individual. The onset of the transition is determined by many factors such as culture, family background, and the personality of the individual. Emerging adulthood (as cited in Santrock, 2014) is the term to describe the transition period from adolescence to adulthood.

Adolescence is considered people between the ages of 13 and 21. Puberty is the physical maturing that makes an individual capable of sexual reproduction. Transition and change often comes in different forms, which can either be joyful, stressful or a combination of both. Sometimes people change their relationships, jobs, where they live, beliefs and even their goals in life as a result of change. Socio-cultural theorists emphasize that much of the development takes place though direct interaction between children and other people e.g. parents, teachers, siblings and so on. Lev Vygotsky (1934) argued that this interaction helps children to acquire the skills and knowledge that are valued by their culture. Children are active learners, constructing knowledge, skills, and attitudes, not just mirroring the world around them. Essentially, the history and the culture of the society in which a child grows up and the events making up a child’s personal history determine much more than what that child knows or likes.
